As a parent of a student athlete, you want them to succeed in sports, but you also want them to stay healthy. Too many young athletes play through pain because they don’t want to disappoint their parents or coaches. They fear losing playing time or have a fear of missing out (FOMO). As a parent, you play a critical role. Dr. Johnson shares that there are three must-have conversations as your student athlete participates in sports.

1. Talk with Your Child
Start by checking in regularly with your student-athlete: “How are your legs feeling after practice?” “Are you more tired than usual?” or “Are you still enjoying the game?” are questions that open the door for honest conversations about pain, soreness, or fatigue. Reassure your child that speaking up won’t mean they’re letting anyone down. Catching discomfort early often prevents more serious injuries later, but it starts with ongoing conversations that are honest, open, and transparent.

2. Talk with the Coach
Connect with your child’s coach to discuss practice intensity, rest days, and how players report and recover from pain. Share any relevant information about your child’s history or medical conditions so the coach can help keep them safe.

3. Talk with the Orthopedic Doctor
If an injury occurs or pain lingers, do NOT ignore it. A quick visit to an orthopedic doctor can help determine if soreness is just part of training or if it’s an early warning sign of overuse. Orthopedic specialists can provide guidance on safe training, recovery strategies, or treatment plans if needed. Having a trusted doctor in the loop gives you peace of mind and ensures your child’s long-term health comes first.

Be An Advocate for Balance
Finally, be the voice of balance. Make sure your child takes at least one or two days off from organized sports each week, enjoys seasonal breaks, and avoids specializing in just one sport year-round. Rest is just as important as practice when it comes to building strong, healthy athletes.

The thrill of a new sports season brings an infectious energy, igniting passion and anticipation in both parents and their budding athletes. To ensure that your child is fully prepared to shine on the field, follow these three essential steps.

Step 1: Complete a Pre-Participation Physical Exam (PPE)
Every young athlete should have a comprehensive pre-participation physical exam (PPE) before the season starts. This exam includes:
- A review of medical history to identify any health concerns.
- Assessment of vital signs and vision.
- Evaluation of strength, flexibility, and joint stability.

Step 2: Consider Musculoskeletal Screenings
In addition to the standard PPE, musculoskeletal screenings can help prevent overuse injuries by assessing:
- Posture and movement mechanics.
- Flexibility, range of motion, and functional movement.
- Previous injury sites for ongoing concerns.

Step 3: Stay Engaged as a Parent
Active parental involvement is key to your athlete’s success. Come back on Friday and read part two, "Three Must-Have Conversations to Avoid Injury". Your ongoing participation can significantly enhance your athlete’s well-being and performance from the starting blocks to the finish line.

What We Offer:
- Annual PPEs for health checks.
- Musculoskeletal screenings to identify risks.
- Resources on warm-ups, rest, and nutrition.

Let’s work together to keep your young athlete healthy and ready for a successful season!

The most common neck and spinal injuries that can occur by using a slip and slide include whiplash injuries, compression spinal fractures, disc herniations, and spinal facet joint injuries. Someone should be concerned and seek medical attention following the use of a slip and slide if they experience persistent or worsening pain, pain radiating to the extremities, weakness of the extremities, and/or numbness. A change in bowel or bladder function could also be a red flag.

Some of these injuries can be treated conservatively (NSAIDs, rest, physical therapy), but some may require surgery. Advanced imaging techniques, such as MRI or CT scans, may be necessary for a more thorough evaluation of injuries and for making clinical decisions regarding treatment options. The dangers of ignoring the sides could include chronic pain, neck/spinal deformity, persistent numbness, and possibly paralysis, depending on the injury sustained. Although slip and slide may be tempting with the warmer weather, for the aforementioned reasons and risks, I strongly recommend against adults utilizing this as a method of summer fun. Safer alternatives may include floating loungers and paddles for pools, water obstacle courses that eliminate hard landings, misting tents, and splash pads.

Although I have never had an injury from something similar, I have had injuries doing things that seemed fun and youthful, in hindsight realizing that some risks certainly are not worth it. I believe it is crucial to understand the stakes of physical well-being, and I will always encourage my patients to do the same.

Tuesday, July 29th, was National Chicken Wing Day. We just missed it, but we wanted to ask the Lone Star Orthopaedic and Spine physicians the pressing question, "Bone-in or boneless?" We hope you enjoy our break from the seriousness of our post to bring you a little more levity. An old joke goes, "What type of chicken wings do orthopaedic doctors prefer?" The answer is "bone-in, because if they are boneless, orthopaedics would not be involved."

We would like to hear from our LSO community. In the comments, tell us which you prefer: "Bone-in or boneless?"

All of our doctors are dedicated to restoring you to an active lifestyle. Meet our team of 13 physicians covering 6 different specialties.

The FIFA Club World Cup concluded on Sunday, with Chelsea winning at MetLife Field. Dr. R. Scott Dominguez, one of our Foot and Ankle Surgeons, shares his insights on common soccer injuries.

Ankle sprains are the most common type of injury in soccer. If you’ve sustained an ankle sprain and can’t bear weight, see a podiatrist within 3-5 days of your injury. Achilles tendinitis, caused by overuse, requires a visit to your P*P or podiatrist if symptoms last more than a week. An Achilles tendon rupture is the most severe type of Achilles injury, and in most cases requires surgical repair. If you suspect this, seek a podiatrist within a week.

A Lisfranc injury can involve a sprain or fracture of the midfoot and requires immediate non-weight bearing, along with follow-up with a podiatrist within 7 days. Finally, ankle fractures refer to breaks in one or more of the bones that form the ankle joint. If you suspect an ankle fracture, seek emergency care right away and see a podiatrist no later than 5 days after the injury.

Here are the top ways to avoid soccer-specific injuries.

1. Warm up thoroughly before every practice and game to minimize your risk of injury.

2. Commit to strength and conditioning year-round, improving your leg strength, core, and cardiovascular health.

3. Choose cleats that fit appropriately. They help improve traction and provide ankle support and arch stability needed to make quick cuts on the turf.

If an injury has you riding the pine, book your appointment now and get back on the field.

Now that we have passed July 4th, the summer is heating up. A couple of weeks ago, we discussed the importance of staying hydrated. Today, we will address five of the most common misconceptions, myths, and mistakes about sun protection. Let's first define the difference between UVA and UVB rays we get from the sun. UVA refers to ultraviolet A, the most prevalent type of sunlight, and is present throughout most of the year. It pe*****tes deepest and contributes to aging, wrinkles, and skin cancer. UVB is ultraviolet B, known for causing sunburn, and affects the outer layer of your skin.

#1 "My Sunscreen says waterproof, so one application will last all day."
A common myth, but dermatologists agree that sunscreen, even waterproof, should be reapplied every 2 hours. Even if you are not in the water!

#2 "I got my chest and back covered, so I am good to go." A common mistake made in a hurry leads to missed areas when applying sunscreen, including the scalp, the tops of the feet, the back of the neck, and the ears. Also, use no more than a shot glass–sized amount for the entire body and about a nickel-sized amount for the face.

#3 "Darker skin does not require sunscreen." The idea that darker skin does not need sunscreen is a common misconception. While higher melanin levels in darker skin provide some natural protection against UV damage, they do not eliminate the risk of sunburn or skin cancer.

#4 "I can skip the sunscreen, it is cloudy today." Many people believe that clouds block UV rays, but in reality, 80% can still pe*****te through them.

#5 "I use a tanning bed to avoid the burn; it is completely safe." This misconception does not take into account that tanning itself is a sign of skin damage that can lead to skin cancer and aging.
