Helping Idaho Families Through the Immigration Process
Spotlight Family: Shahpoor Motawakil Family
Home Country: Afghanistan
Shahpoor was working as a radiology technician at Nejat Hospital when the Taliban captured the capital city of Kabul in August 2021. He had previously been treated by them and was forced to flee without his family for his safety. He left with the US Army as a refugee on 26 August 2021.
His wife and four children (Sidiqullah, Maliha, Abdul Aziz and Freshta) were then forced to flee to Pakistan to reach a US embassy. They were eventually able to be given US visas and come to the United States in May 2024, spending nearly 3 years apart. Since that time Shahpoor has worked with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Boise to restart their lives. Shahpoor works at St. Alphonsus Hospital doing medical assisting while he attends school to gain his radiology certificates to work again as a radiology technician. He hopes to complete those and continue to work in the same field he did in Afghanistan.
They have faced many serious challenges from fleeing their home country including learning a new language, experiencing new cultures in Idaho and years of separation. They are grateful for the many wonderful opportunities and safety their new home and freedom will grant to them. We are grateful for the opportunity to help this remarkable family on their journey!
