Most sheet masks don’t come with a history lesson! This one is a souvenir given to me from the Owakudani hot springs. According to the packet, about 3,000 years ago, Mt. Kamiyama erupted, creating the volcanic crater known as Owakudani. The area still vents steam and sulfur. Originally called “Jigoku” (Hell), it was renamed “Owakudani” (Great Boiling Valley) in 1873 to honor a visit by Emperor Meiji, as the old name was considered disrespectful for royalty. The springs are famous for having a high concentration of metasilicic acid, a natural compound used for skin conditioning. This level is one of the highest in Japan! The mask also contains hydrolyzed eggshell membrane and local sake. Overall it’s a soothing and rejuvenating mask, just what I wanted as I’m coming off of my recent Glassifier treatment.
