A recent article from Insider explained that US hospitals are under strain as cases rise, primarily among the unvaccinated. Four states, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Texas, were running out of intensive care unit (ICU) beds, with more than 90% occupancy rates, according to data from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Tuesday.

However, the situation may be more dire than it seems, as the Alabama Hospital Association said Tuesday that hospitals have run out of ICU beds, reported Alabama television station WSFA. It said there were 1,621 patients in need of ICU beds statewide, but only 1,537 beds available, leaving patients in need waiting in emergency rooms or hospital hallways.

As a whole, the US has been seeing more than 100,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations a day in the past week according to The New York Times tracker. Daily COVID-19-related hospitalizations have not been this high since February. As hospitalization rates continue to increase there remains a continued need for effective therapeutics.

A USA TODAY article contextualizes the ongoing toll from . As COVID-19 cases continue to rise experts are renewing warnings of a “twindemic”, the convergence of rising hospitalizations from the flu and COVID-19, which could overwhelm hospitals later this year. The country recorded more than 7,200 COVID-19 deaths in a week, the equivalent of a Pearl Harbor attack three times a week, or a 9/11 attack every three days.

The persistence of high rates of infection, hospitalization and death, despite wide availability of COVID-19 vaccines, is a reminder of the continued need for additional therapeutics for hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

A recent article by the Twin Cities Pioneer Press covered the increasing hospitalizations in Minnesota. The number of Minnesotans hospitalized with COVID-19 has more than doubled during the month of August, contributing to a tightening supply of available beds across the state.

The latest surge in cases is driven by the more contagious delta variant, which health officials suspect can also cause more severe illness. Serious cases are most common in older residents, but since delta became the main source of infections, severe cases have trended younger, health officials say.

This steep increase in hospitalizations have also left Minnesota healthcare workers stressed and tired. It’s led to an exodus of care providers and nearly every part of Minnesota has been affected. Some providers have two to three times the open jobs they typically had before the pandemic. As hospitalization rates continue to increase there remains a continued need for effective therapeutics.

hospitalizations have surpassed 100,000 patients, nearly doubling since the start of August in The United States. The last time the United States reported numbers like this was in January. Deaths related to COVID-19 are on the rise due to the Delta variant and as hospitalizations have climbed, adequate and qualified healthcare staffing has become an issue in some states.

Idaho hospitals reported that the number of patients in the ICU with COVID-19 has reached an all-time high across the state since the start of the pandemic. As hospitalization rates continue to increase there remains a continued need for effective therapeutics.

According to Fox News cases have nearly doubled in the past two weeks. According to Johns Hopkins University, The US recorded an average of about 509 deaths a day for the week ending on August 8th, to nearly a 97% increase to about 1000 deaths for the week ending on august 22nd.

All three COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States are considered very effective at preventing serious illness leading to hospitalization or death. However, so-called breakthrough infections where fully vaccinated individuals test positive for COVID-19 could be rising, according to a New York Times report citing preliminary data from six states.

According to a recent article from The Guardian discussing the seasonal pattern of both the flu and , countries with temperate climates were found to have higher number of COVID-19 cases during the winter months, when temperature and humidity were low. Meanwhile, in countries with tropical climates the cases peaked during the summer monsoons, when humidity was high.

The results, published in the journal GeoHealth, reveal that there were two variables – ultraviolet levels and air-drying capacity – that consistently correlated with Covid-19 levels in all countries. Bright sunshine and fast evaporation were associated with falling rates of coronavirus, while cloudy skies and slow evaporation appear to aid the spread of the virus.

Within the next coming months, especially as winter approaches, it's important that we highlight the need for treatments. ’s treatment drug is intended for patients who are newly hospitalized with pneumonia, but not yet on mechanical ventilation; however, it is not yet authorized, or approved, in any country.

The demand for treatments for was mentioned in a recent article on Healio. As the delta variant continues to sweep across the nation, the demand for treatments has outpaced the global supply.

As hospitalizations are unexpectedly increasing across the country, it has led to an unprecedented demand for treatments that the global supply is not able to keep up with. Due to this sudden high demand of tocilizumab it is anticipated that there will be periods of stockout in the weeks and months ahead.

A recent article from Endpoints News covered Genentech and Roche’s drug Actemra and the road to EUA. Actemra was granted Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA to treat despite some mixed data, but 11,000-patient analysis displayed it cut the risk of death. Now as vaccination rates decline and cases are increasing the companies hospitals are running out of supply of Actemra.

Humanigen’s drug lenzilumab, which is awaiting Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA, has met its primary endpoint of the Phase 3 LIVE-AIR trial with a 1.54-fold relative improvement in the likelihood of survival without the need for invasive mechanical ventilation (survival without ventilation, or ‘SWOV’) compared to placebo. Lenzilumab also improved the relative likelihood of SWOV by 1.92-fold in subjects who received both corticosteroids and remdesivir as well as a 3-fold improvement in the likelihood of SWOV in patients with a CRP

Despite highest level of vaccination in the world (78%), delta variant is leading to a significant spike in infections and hospitalizations in Israel. Yesterday, an article from The American Association for the Advancement of Science noted more than half of infections and nearly 60% of hospitalizations are in fully vaccinated people. Israel has a robust public health infrastructure and a population enrolled in HMOs, making Israel a model from which the rest of the world can learn.

As vaccinated people fill the hospitals, it is important to note the ongoing need for therapeutics to treat them and for potential booster vaccinations, especially in older and more susceptible patients. would like to highlight the need for treatments as hospitalizations are still occurring among vaccinated and unvaccinated patients. is intended for patients who are newly hospitalized with pneumonia, but not yet on mechanical ventilation; however, it is not yet authorized, or approved, in any country.
