Mental Wellness is much like growing vegetables in a garden.

Just as we till the soil, plant seeds, and provide water and sunlight each day to help them gradually grow, our inner well-being is also nurtured through the simple daily ways we care for ourselves.

Rather than relying only on what is given from the outside, we can listen carefully to the voice within and take rest and joy as our “nourishment.”

In doing so, the true strength and resilience of the heart begin to blossom.

So today, what kind of “water” or “light” will you offer to your heart?

It’s Labor Day today.

A gentle reminder that rest is also part of the work we do.

Like the cats stretching in the sunlight,
I let myself pause,
open a book,
and simply breathe.

To labor, to rest
both nurture the rhythm of life.

I have been providing psychoeducation seminars and training to many companies, schools, and organizations. One of the most popular and frequently requested topics I cover is “Stress Management.”

There are a few key points I like to share, but one of the most important is that “stress management is not a single solution that works for everyone.”

Effective stress management must be customized to who you are as an individual. It requires assessing what is appropriate based on your health, life stage, and personal circumstances.

While the media often presents certain strategies as if they are universal “miracle solutions,” the reality is that true stress management looks different for each person.

People often hope for one quick fix for all stress, but the truth is, we need to take time to understand our mind, thoughts, and body.

Only then we can develop the most effective stress management plan that supports our unique needs and well-being.

“Designing Wellness”

People often ask me, “How does a counselor’s daily life look?” In my case, I begin each morning by offering a prayer of gratitude to my ancestors.

Then, I always check in with my own energy and emotional state.

Our bodies and minds change day by day.

They are influenced by our physical condition, hormones, and even the seasons.

Sometimes the body feels tired and energy does not flow smoothly. Other times, the heart feels a little unsettled.

This is why every morning I observe myself and design the way I will live that day: a day to move more slowly, a day to be energetic, or a day to focus on inner dialogue.

By listening closely to my energy and heart, I choose how I will spend the day.

Wellness does not arrive on its own, nor is it something given from the outside.

True well-being of body and mind is cultivated through the choices we make and the way we design each day.

Born and raised in Japan and now working in mental health in the U.S., I’ve witnessed how far the U.S. has come, perhaps 50 to 60 years ahead of Japan in building mental health support systems.

From early childhood, care is integrated into schools, workplaces, communities, and healthcare. Since the Pandemic, even young children access support online. Insurance coverage and public awareness have helped make mental health part of daily life.

This didn’t happen by chance. It is the result of decades of national investment. While the system is still imperfect, it remains one of the most developed in the world.

But what about countries without such systems? Are people simply expected to endure?

When we’re in emotional pain, we can’t wait decades for change. That’s why it’s essential to make the most of what’s available now, and most importantly, to nurture wellness within ourselves before crisis arises.

Wellness cultivated from within is the most sustainable form of care. It isn’t dependent on external support systems. We often focus on what we lack, but what we truly need is often already inside us.

You don’t have to give up on being well.
True wellness already lives within you.

Wellness is like playing music.

When life gets busy, many of us pack our days so tightly it’s like cramming too many notes into one measure of a song.

Beautiful music needs pauses, changes in tempo, and moments of rest. Yet, we often keep playing the same melody every day, even when our mood shifts or the notes begin to clash.

✨ Take a moment.
Listen to your own music.
What kind of wellness melody are you playing today?

In July, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet with 44 junior high and high school students from Japan who came to California as part of a summer program to explore the U.S.

I was grateful to offer them an experiential session of Movement and Art Therapy, along with a conversation about mental health and my journey of becoming a psychotherapist.

It was a wonderful and heartwarming experience. I was deeply touched by the students’ openness to the topic of mental wellness and their genuine engagement in the activities. Many asked insightful questions during the session, and even after it ended, some students stayed behind to talk more, asking about mental health and how to pursue a path in this field.

Although mental health stigma still exists in the culture, I could feel a quiet shift. There is a growing openness, a curiosity, and a sincere desire to understand. I see light in this younger generation, that they hold so much potential and possibility and this is my pleasure and hope.

I wholeheartedly hope that each of them will continue to unfold their uniqueness and live with wholeness, joy, and deep well-being throughout their lives.

❤️
