🦇 Bats in North Carolina: What You Need to Know 🦇
At Carolina Wildlife & Pest, we believe in educating our community while protecting homes—and the wild lives that surround them. Today, let’s talk bats: misunderstood, vital to our ecosystem, and often found roosting where they shouldn’t be.

🔄 Transient Colonies:
Seeing bats under gable vents or along your roofline? You might be witnessing a transient colony—a temporary stopover during seasonal movement. These bats typically don’t stay long, and disturbing them can trigger unnecessary stress or dispersal into hard-to-reach areas.

👶 Maternity Season (May–August):
In North Carolina, bat eviction is strictly prohibited during maternity season. From May through early August, female bats form maternity colonies to raise their pups—who are flightless for weeks. Sealing out the mothers would mean leaving the babies to die, which is both illegal and inhumane.

🌡️ Cold Weather Restrictions (Below 55°F):
Bats rely on warm temperatures and abundant insects for survival. Evictions when it’s below 55 degrees are not permitted because cold conditions mean limited food and greater risk of bat mortality. Ethical removals only occur outside of maternity season and during mild weather—typically between August 1st and October, or again in spring.

😷 White-Nose Syndrome (WNS):
This deadly fungal disease affects hibernating bats across the U.S., including here in NC. It disrupts their sleep cycles, leading to starvation. Though harmless to humans, WNS has decimated bat populations and reinforces the need for minimal handling, proper timing, and careful exclusion techniques.

🦠 Rabies – Rare, But Serious:
Yes, bats can carry rabies, but it's extremely rare. However, any bat found on the ground, flying during the day, or in contact with people or pets should be reported immediately. Never handle a bat with bare hands—call professionals like us to assess and handle the situation safely.

📞 Need Help?
Whether you’ve got a full attic colony, a single bat inside your home, or just want peace of mind, we're here to help with free inspections, ethical removals, and professional exclusion services.

Emergency Barred Owl Rescue

Last night, we received an emergency call from Burlington Animal Services about a unique situation: an adult barred owl trapped inside a chimney. After inspecting the scene, I discovered the owl was stuck on top of the flue in an 8x8 chimney space—unable to climb back out and potentially injured.

Since barred owls are protected birds, I immediately contacted local game wardens in Burlington for guidance. They connected me with a phenomenal wildlife biologist, who was instrumental in assisting with the rescue. Recognizing the challenges of this delicate situation, I also reached out to Burlington Animal Services again for an extra set of hands. Even though this kind of wildlife work isn’t typically in their wheelhouse, they went above and beyond to lend a hand.

Together, we carefully and safely removed the owl, ensuring no further harm came to it. The wildlife biologist transported the bird to a raptor center, where it is now receiving care and is expected to make a full recovery.

This rescue was done in good faith, at no cost, with the shared goal of protecting this beautiful bird and ensuring it gets a second chance in the wild. A huge thank-you to Burlington Animal Services and the local wildlife biologist, Joe Folta, PHD, with NC Wildlife Resources Commission for their teamwork and dedication to this successful rescue.

We’re proud to serve our community and wildlife alike. Sometimes, it’s not about the business—it’s about doing what’s right.

📹 Check our page for a posting the full video of removal also.
