Spent a wonderful day connecting with other professionals in the Therapeutic Horticulture/ Horticulture Therapy field at the Mid-Atlantic Horticultural Therapy Network, Inc. conference in NY today. As someone who works with participants facilitating therapeutic plant programs everyday it’s important to me to continue to learn and grow from events like this!

Did you know exploring different pumpkins and squash of the season could help connect people to the time of year and be a wonderful sensory exploration? It can also be a great for mental and social engagement! A way to get more hands on and creative would be to decorate mini pumpkins with aromatic and colorful natural decorations 🍁

This week in one of the senior facilities that hold monthly programs with me we were exploring apples and apple season in CT. A woman who I regularly see in the group but tends to display some anxiety and confusion in programs spent the hour talking about making apple sauce. She had been taught how by her mother in law, she had specific apples she liked to use, it was simple but so good. Her enthusiasm and excitement sparked by apples was amazing to experience and shows the power of therapeutic horticulture to connect with seniors and memory care especially.
