"The logistics of pumping, the lack of reliable spaces, and confusion about workplace rights are persistent barriers," says Sascha Mayer, co-founder and chief experience officer with Mamava, one of the sponsors of the study. "These obstacles chip away at parents’ ability to meet their feeding goals and make breastfeeding feel less accessible, despite their strong desire and motivation to do it." https://bit.ly/45OVSv5

Many parents find it hard to maintain their breastfeeding journey once they return work, especially since many employers do not have adequate or designated spaces for them to pump at work.

Students at the University of Northern Colorado, UNC wanted to make their campus a more equitable place for breastfeeding parents. So the Student Leadership for Environmental Action Fund (LEAF) group coordinated with the University’s Lactation Support Program to purchase a Mamava XL lactation pod for their annual funding project. Here are three takeaways from UNC’s efforts to improve campus lactation accommodations.

1) Let students lead the way
In researching improved inclusivity on campus, the common refrain was that breastfeeding and chestfeeding parents wanted another lactation space on campus—one they didn’t have to walk too far to access.

2) Connect with other campus lactivists
Alena Clark, known on campus as “the breastfeeding lady,” has worked tirelessly with her colleague, Yvette Lucero-Nguyen, since 2012 to secure lactation rooms on campus and build the Lactation Support Program. When she heard about LEAF’s project to support a new lactation space, she and Yvette joined in to help.

3) Tell everyone how you’re improving well-being for every body
The LEAF team is proud of the difference they’ve made on their campus, and so is their advisor, Chelsea Romulo. “I always tell my students, we can figure something out,” says Romulo, an Assistant Professor of Geography, GIS, & Sustainability. “Go to your grants office. Talk to who teaches the class on grant writing. Tell everyone what you’re doing. You never know who’s going to be connected.”

It’s Workplace Lactation Week 2025! This year’s theme is “A World of Support: Creating Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplaces Everywhere.” Supporting new parents in the workplace means fostering a culture that encourages inclusivity and enhances employee well-being. As Sarah Olin, founder and CEO of LUMO, says, “If we’re supporting new parents, we’re able to support all parents.” Here are three things employers can do that will have a positive impact on new parents.

✅ Offer paid parental leave.
Paid parental leave is a huge boon for new parents, but without a federal paid leave policy it can vary from state to state and workplace to workplace. “It can literally be life-saving to offer paid leave,” says Sarah Berkley, Vice President, Well-Being & Engagement at NFP.

✅ Provide workplace lactation spaces.
Make sure breastfeeding employees have a non-bathroom space to pump. “HR often tackles hard problems, but providing a lactation space is an easy solution that signals an organization is welcoming and ready for new parents,” says Sascha Mayer, cofounder of Mamava.

✅ Make your commitment to parents visible.
Implement workplace policies and benefits that reinforce the message that parental responsibilities are expected and respected within the organization. For Carlos Cruz, Associate Vice Chancellor, Student Wellbeing and Social Support at Dallas College, this means providing free resources to student parents. “By providing all the necessary resources [for students who are also parents] to be successful in their academic journey and career, we’re trying to remove challenges to life circumstances.”

Creating supportive workplaces for new parents requires understanding public policy and fostering a culture that encourages inclusivity, enhances employee well-being, and boosts productivity. Leading experts in well-being offer ways employers can cultivate workplaces that support new parents.

We’re celebrating with a shout-out to Morgan Taylor-McFadden, Director of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), whose work focuses on helping those who live in neighborhoods with the highest rates of infant mortality and who are directly impacted by racism and systemic inequities. “Many of the women we serve express a strong desire to breastfeed, but it's not easy,” says Taylor-McFadden. “Breastfeeding is not just a choice and not just a behavior. There are a number of barriers, especially when we’re talking about Black experience in this country. Our work goes beyond individual behavior to include the policies and infrastructure shaping our environment.”

One of the ways Taylor-McFadden helped improve infrastructure was to procure a Mamava lactation pod for the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building. “Bringing the Mamava pod to the Bolling Building is about more than convenience—it’s a statement. It creates an intentional, private space for nursing and pumping while also signaling that our city values breastfeeding families and is committed to supporting them.”

Mamava and Medela Global surveyed ~3,000 breastfeeding parents in May of 2025 to learn more about their feeding journeys, challenges, and support systems. The findings, for the third year in a row, highlight the fact that pumping is a key part of breastfeeding for most parents and that both workplaces and public spaces need to improve lactation infrastructure.

“Breastfeeding looks different for different parents, but one thing we know for certain is that support for breastfeeding—in workplaces and in public—is not meeting the needs of today’s parents,” said Mamava Cofounder Sascha Mayer.

A large supermarket chain partnered with Mamava to conduct a pilot program with just one freestanding lactation pod. The pilot study was a success, so the supermarket purchased 70 pods and an additional 149 the following year. More pod purchases are planned as part of a comprehensive, multi-year break room remodel project.

All Mamava pods were equipped with Mamava’s Smart Access technology, which allows pod users to open lactation spaces with the (free) Mamava app, streamlines access management for store managers, and provides anonymous data on pod usage to help capacity planning.
