CMV Public Health and Policy Conference

CMV Public Health and Policy Conference Come hear the latest updates on cytomegalovirus (CMV) research; public health initiatives for CMV aw

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection found in developed countries. Pregnant women who contract CMV can pass the virus onto their unborn baby, which can result in multiple disabilities including: hearing loss, vision loss, poor brain growth, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and, in rare cases, fetal death. Recognizing the lack of awareness about CMV and its potential devastating effects on babies, Utah lawmakers led the nation by passing a bill that directs the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) to establish a public education program to raise awareness about CMV and ways to prevent its spread. As part of the education effort, UDOH, public health advocates, and healthcare providers came together to share ideas of how to get the CMV message out to women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. The Cytomegalovirus Public Health & Policy Conference is part of this effort. The goal of the conference is to provide education, delineate prevention efforts, offer information about early intervention options, help other states in replicating Utah's policy efforts, and disseminate family support resources in an effort to reduce the number of babies born with CMV and connect families affected by CMV with the resources they need to improve their quality of life.

The Planning Committee for the CMV Public Health and Policy Conference is committed to sharing stories of those affected by congenital CMV. We would like to share stories of those who have lost a child due to cCMV. If you would like to share a photo or the name of someone who has died, please send your submission to amandakdevereaux@gmail.com. You can share a photo (if you have one), a name if you would like, and something you would like to say about the person or the experience (1-2 sentences). Thank you for helping us honor those who have been lost due to cCMV.

Thank you again for being such an important part of this community.

While we prepare for the upcoming CMV PHP Conference, we would love to have families participating. Please see the following opportunity.

Dear CMV Families,

We’d like to invite you to take part in a meaningful project ahead of the CMV Public Health & Policy Meeting this September.
As part of our program, we’ll be presenting a short video montage featuring CMV children and young adults—thanking the doctors, researchers, and public health leaders who have dedicated their careers to this cause. These heartfelt messages will be a powerful reminder of why their work matters so deeply, and we believe that hearing directly from CMV kids will be an incredibly moving and motivating moment.

If you’re interested, we’d love for you to record a brief video (ideally 20-40 seconds, max 1 minute) of your child sharing a simple message such as:
• “Thank you for helping kids like me!”
• “Because of your work, I’m doing great!”
• Or just their name, age, and a smile or wave—anything that feels right to your family.

Please record the video with your phone held in landscape mode (horizontally) for the best quality when we put the clips together.

Please send the video file to rtetrault@cmvcanada.com

This is completely optional, but we’d love to include as many voices as we can.

Thank you again for being such an important part of this community.

Warmly,
Rob Tetrault
President, CMV Canada
