New UVM Study: Transgender Americans Fear Losing Access to Medical Care

A new study led by Teresa Graziano, nursing professor at the University of Vermont, and published in JAMA Network Open, reveals a deeply concerning trend: transgender individuals face serious mental health risks if access to gender-affirming care is lost.

Key findings from 489 gender-diverse adults:
- 100% feared losing access to care
- Nearly 1 in 3 would consider DIY hormone therapy
- Over 21% reported suicidal ideation

UVM Nursing is stepping into the future with Virtual Reality

This spring, the Department of Nursing launched VR simulation to give students more hands-on experience—without needing more physical space. With over 1,100 VR sessions completed, students are practicing critical decision-making skills in a fully immersive digital hospital.

“Being able to run through different patient experiences and diagnoses via this program has been amazing,” says UVM Nursing grad Julia Otterbein.

UVM and VT Department of Health Making Strides to Improve the Lives of Vermonters with Arthritis

The Osher Center for Integrative Health at UVM has launched an enhanced version of the Walk With Ease Self-Directed program to help Vermonters manage arthritis. This initiative, in collaboration with the Vermont Department of Health, engages UVM’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences students to provide additional support to participants.

Clinical Associate Professor Karen Westervelt highlights that arthritis is the leading cause of disability in Vermont. The program offers weekly contact with participants, aiming to improve their comfort, function, balance, and strength through low-impact activities.

This program not only supports community members but also gives UVM students valuable hands-on experience, boosting their clinical confidence and communication skills.

Organized by Clinical Assistant Professor and Interprofessional Education Director Dr. Holly Whitcomb and Professor Karen Lounsbury, Ph.D., the event featured a keynote address by Dr. Christine Vatovec, who shared critical insights on Earth's vital signs and the role healthcare plays in planetary health.

Dr. Vatovec encouraged health professionals to:
1. Be ready to tackle health issues linked to the environment.
2. Understand how healthcare affects the planet and use this knowledge to provide quality care that benefits the environment.
3. Adopt a Whole Person approach to health, promoting behaviors and policies that have better outcomes for people and the planet.

Students from various health disciplines worked together on case studies, exploring how integrative care can improve health outcomes and benefit the planet. 🌿
