BOOK RECOMMENDATION: CHASING THE HIGH

An accomplished entrepreneur and recovering gambling and drug addict, Michael Dash realized his gaming obsession and his drive to succeed were two sides of the same coin. He was always "chasing the high," whether in the office, the casino or out being the life of the party. Through it all, he was able to devise strategies and routines that enabled him to refocus, reboot, and take control of his life. And his winning approach will help all leaders calm their inner chaos and find fulfillment, serenity, and purpose.

A different life is possible when you stop Chasing the High...and start living.

FIVE TIPS FOR STAYING SOBER THIS ST. PATRICK'S DAY

🍀Immediately say no to any plans you know will tempt you and spend the day with people who support your sobriety. Or spend the day alone, doing things you love.
🍀Bring Alcohol-Free beverage options with you if you do choose to go to a party or gathering.
🍀Find other ways to celebrate without alcohol, such as making green pancakes for breakfast or a traditional Irish dinner or wearing green and attending a local parade!
🍀Remind yourself just how far you’ve come in your sobriety journey. Look at how hard you’ve worked to get this far and don't lose focus of your goals of a clean and healthy life.
🍀Reward yourself the following day! Have a sweet treat, buy a new piece of clothing, or take yourself to lunch, because having something to look forward to is always exciting!

Mental health problems and substance use disorders sometimes occur together. This is because:

▪️Certain illegal drugs can cause people with an addiction to experience one or more symptoms of a mental health problem
▪️Mental health problems can sometimes lead to alcohol or drug use, as some people with a mental health problem may misuse these substances as a form of self-medication
▪️Mental and substance use disorders share some underlying causes, including changes in brain composition, genetic vulnerabilities, and early exposure to stress or trauma

More than one in four adults living with serious mental health problems also has a substance use problem. Substance use problems occur more frequently with certain mental health problems, including:

▪️Depression
▪️Anxiety Disorders
▪️Schizophrenia
▪️Personality Disorders

At River Rock Treatment we devise a comprehensive care plan to address the whole person.

Are you worried about a loved ones drinking habits? How do you know when alcohol use turns into alcoholism?

An alcoholic is someone who drinks alcohol beyond their ability to control it and who is usually unable to stop consuming alcohol voluntarily. Here are some warning signs that might help you determine if drinking has turned into a problem:

🔴 Drinking alone and in secrecy
🔴 Making drinking a priority over responsibilities
🔴 Alcohol withdrawal symptoms
🔴 Extreme mood swings and irritability

If you're looking for a new podcast that also helps support your recovery, we recommend checking out Busy Living Sober!

Elizabeth (Bizzy) Chance is in long-term recovery and has been sober for over a decade. After being trained as a recovery coach and starting her own practice, she decided that seeing clients one-on-one wasn’t for her. Her dream of wanting to help people using the communication skills she learned in college resulted in Busy Living Sober, a podcast with the mission of “giving people an opportunity to listen, learn and live a sober lifestyle without shame while having fun.”

The Busy Living Sober podcast is designed to support the broad ecosystem of people impacted by addiction — including friends, families and co-workers. Their recovery support content is readily available online, allowing access to anyone from anywhere, at any time.

Most of the time the word "selfish" carries a negative connotation. It can be defined as “lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure.” However, when it comes to sobriety, it is important to be selfish, and to choose what is best for your life and well-being. Redefining the word selfish in recovery is important.
