🌟 Representing Wisconsin on the National Stage 🌟

We’re proud to celebrate the leadership of Becky Zingsheim, President, and Rachel Elliott, President-Elect of the Wisconsin Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) — both valued leaders at The Richardson School, a MyPath Company.

This month, they represented Wisconsin at the CEC Leadership Institute in Alexandria, VA, where they joined special education leaders from across the country to:
✅ Strengthen advocacy efforts
✅ Share proven strategies
✅ Exchange fresh ideas to support educators and students in Wisconsin

Their insights and connections will help advance our shared mission of empowering exceptional learners and the professionals who serve them. 💙

🌟 Summer Learning Beyond the Classroom 🌟

At Genesee Lake School, a MyPath Company, our Extended School Year (ESY) program is all about building skills, creating memories, and connecting with the community.

This summer, our students and staff enjoyed:
⚾ Cheering on the Dockhounds (and even meeting Louie the mascot!)
🎁 Giving back by helping Santa “fill his sleigh” with donated toys
🌳 Exploring local parks and catching a movie—with plenty of popcorn
🍪 Practicing independence by ordering their favorite Crumbl cookies

We’re proud of the growth, joy, and community engagement our students experienced. 💙

When Ray moved into a Homes for Independent Living home in Fall 2024, everything shifted.

The once-quiet observer is now the house comedian, welcoming visitors with:
👋 “What’s your first name?”
👋 “What’s your last name?”
…then a cheerful, “See ya later, alligator!” 🐊

He’s walking daily, cheering on housemates, and making everyone smile. 💙

🌟 Transformation Through Environment: Ray’s Story 🌟

Ray joined Homes for Independent Living (HIL), a MyPath Company, in June 2021. When he first moved into his home, he mostly kept to himself, quietly observing life from his favorite chair. Social invitations were often declined, and interactions were minimal.

But everything changed after a move in Fall 2024 to a more engaging HIL setting. What followed was nothing short of remarkable.

Ray, once seen as shy and reserved, blossomed into a vibrant, social member of the household. He now delights in conversations, jokes with housemates, and warmly welcomes visitors with his signature icebreakers:
👋 “What’s your first name?”
👋 “What’s your last name?”
👋 “Where do you live?”
…followed by a joyful, “See ya later, alligator!” 🐊

Ray also found a love for movement, joining the home’s daily walking group and encouraging others along the way: “Come on, you can do it!” His increased physical activity has greatly improved both his health and happiness.

From zip code trivia to genuine friendships, Ray reminds us how the right environment can unlock hidden strengths—and that meaningful change is always possible.

Here’s to Ray’s continued journey of connection, growth, and joy. 💙

🌟 Celebrating Growth & Independence 🌟

In the summer of 2022, Allie took a big step toward independence when she moved into Homes for Independent Living (HIL), a MyPath Company.

With the love and support of her devoted parents, Allie transitioned from her family home into a new environment that offered both opportunity and stability, while keeping her close to the people she loves most.

💬 “Never give up.”

That simple phrase is what one attendee told us gives her hope for her loved ones living with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS).

It’s a powerful reminder: progress doesn’t always look like big wins or perfect outcomes. Sometimes, it’s just showing up—even on the days when motivation feels out of reach. It’s taking one small step forward, even when the finish line seems far away.

🌟 Meet Brittney Henry, a dedicated employee-owner whose journey with MyPath has been marked by growth, learning, and purpose.

Brittney began her career at Genesee Community Services (GCS), a MyPath Company, in 2020 as a part-time in-home Behavioral Therapist for youth enrolled in Wraparound Milwaukee. By 2021, she had stepped into a full-time role supporting both Wraparound and ABA clients, while also completing her master’s internship with GCS. That same year, she picked up additional shifts as a Direct Support Specialist at Prader-Willi Homes (PWH), a MyPath Company, to continue expanding her skills.

After earning her master’s degree in 2022, Brittney continued supporting GCS part-time before stepping into a full-time Clinical Care Coordinator role at PWH. Even when she moved on from that role, she remained connected to GCS and, in 2024, became a Licensed Professional Counselor and transitioned into her current role as a Treatment Support Specialist II.

Reflecting on the past five years, Brittney shares:
💬 “MyPath helped me grow professionally by allowing me to do work I love for a population I’m passionate about. It also connected me with amazing people who helped me strengthen my therapeutic skills. My supervisors have been supportive while also challenging me—something that’s really helped me grow.”

We’re proud to celebrate Brittney’s accomplishments and the meaningful impact she continues to make through her work. Thank you, Brittney, for your commitment to making a difference!

🌈 Proud to Celebrate Disability Pride 🌈

MyPath was honored to be a lead sponsor of the Disability Pride Madison Festival, held this past month.

This incredible, family-friendly event brought the community together to celebrate disability pride, culture, and inclusion, with the spotlight on the voices, talents, and leadership of disabled individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

From live performances and adaptive sports demos (including aerial wheelchair dancing!) to a colorful parade and kids’ activities hosted by the Madison Children's Museum and Art Cart, the day was filled with energy, joy, and connection.

At MyPath, we believe in building communities where everyone belongs, and where every person’s identity is valued, seen, and celebrated.

👏 Thank you to the organizers, performers, and attendees who made the festival a powerful celebration of inclusion and pride. We’re proud to stand with you.

Going forward, we will be highlighting client stories from our nine MyPath companies. Starting with Homes for Independent Living (HIL:)

Prior to Alicia’s arrival at HIL, life was tough for her. She had quite a few hospital stays and resided in five different group homes. Sadly, she only stayed about one year at each one. According to Karen Schultz, Regional Director HIL, Alicia struggled living with others. She was often unable to control her anger toward other residents when conflict arose. Her struggles in these settings sometimes led to her elopement from group homes where she lived.

Her experience at HIL has been quite different from those other care settings. While HIL has protocols in place for when Alicia requires isolation, there is rarely a need to implement them. Karen says, “Alicia is able to identify her triggers, engage her coping skills to work with staff and find a resolution without physical aggression.” She adds, “She has spent a lot of time working on herself and putting herself first, which has made her stronger.”

Alicia says that she has learned so much and is so thankful for what HIL has done for her. “Now when I get upset, I just let the staff know that I’m going to my room. Then I come out a new person.” In addition, she has learned how to cook, help others with chores, meal plan, and get out into the community. “I can go out more than I did before. It makes me happy that I can see different people.”

Alicia adds, “I feel like I can spread my wings and fly. You changed me so much since I entered HIL. No other programs have done that for me. I want to say thank you for the whole thing!”

Please join us in celebrating Lynn Matzke’s 30-year anniversary with Homes for Independent Living (HIL!)

Lynn is our Executive Director and holds the third longest tenure of over 900 HIL company owners.

Lynn started at HIL with the intention that it would be a short-term gig to help get through college. Instead, she made working at HIL her life long career! She began working as a direct care staff in Fort Atkinson in 1992.

Working her way up through the company, she became the Executive Director for all of HIL in 2016.

Lynn’s contributions to make HIL a successful company are endless! She advocates for the people we support, creates new service lines, adapts to the ever-changing environment of the human services world, forges relationships with funders to the benefit of HIL and our clients, and leads and supports HIL’s growing team.

Lynn’s passion is evident in everything she does, and it is contagious to those around her. She truly is a cornerstone and champion of HIL.

Lynn, we celebrate your tireless hard work, your achievements that have helped make HIL successful, your many talents, and we celebrate you. Thank you, for leading with grace and conviction, for being an inspiration to others. Thank you, for dedicating your career to people who deserve to be seen as more than just their disability and to the people who care for them. We look forward to your leadership for many more years! Congratulations to Melissa Fredricks, HIL’s Operations Support Manager, on her 25-year anniversary with HIL! That’s right - 25 Years… 300 Months… 1,304 Weeks… 9,132 days… 219,168 hours… 13,150,080 minutes…

Out of over 900 owners, Melissa has the 9th longest tenure at HIL! Melissa started as a DSP in the Sheboygan region in 1996. Four years later, she moved to Green Bay when the Brown region was just getting started and worked in various roles from a DSP to what is now known as a Client Service Manager. In 2011, she started her role in Operations Support and for the past 10 years she has been helping operations anyway she can, from getting new programs ready, to being our licensing and regulation expert, and everything in between.

Melissa’s knowledge and experiences have made her an invaluable part of HIL. She exemplifies kindness, dedication, integrity and commitment. Melissa has done some incredibly amazing work on behalf of HIL and people who rely on others to care for and about them. We are lucky to work by her side.
