Rising Tide Vermont Confronting the Root Causes of Climate Change

Rising Tide Vermont organizes and takes direct action to confront the root causes of climate change and to facilitate a just transition to resilient and equitable land-based communities. We are part of a movement which opposes the expansion of industrial infrastructure in the Northeast US and Eastern Canada, and exposes corporate and state-sponsored false solutions to the climate crisis. Rising Ti

de Vermont is committed to dismantling systems of oppression and domination- such as sexism, racism and colonialism- within society, as well as within our organizing and movement-building. We recognize that the impacts of climate chaos and extreme energy fall disproportionately on Indigenous peoples, low-income communities, and communities of color, and support the leadership of these frontline communities in the global struggle for climate justice.

The Earth First! Gathering is in the Green Mountain National Forest this summer! Join us July 1-9 for a week outside under the stars, sharing skills of all kinds, having discussions, and doing direct action trainings, climb trainings, and plant walks.

The exact location will be announced in June — keep an eye on the Earth First! Journal page for more info!

2023 Earth First! The Gathering
July 1-9
Occupied Abenaki territory (so-called vermont or new hampshire)
exact location tba later.

Earth first! is, has been, and will continue to be a think tank and proving ground of direct action in defense of the earth and those who reside here. At 43 years old, earth first! may seem like an institution, but in reality it is still created every day by those of us who show up to resist ecocide. If you show up, you're at the table. There's no way to sell you on earth first!, cuz earth first! is not for sale.

So come to the gathering! Say your piece, make it yours, and let's fight the bastards together. You don't have to be an earth first!er to come to an ef! gathering - the fight for the earth is intimately intertwined with struggles against white supremacy, patriarchy, settler colonialism and all forces which oppose collective liberation. The more we work together and build connections across the intersections of struggle, the stronger our resistance grows. So join us in July for a week outside under the stars, sharing skills of all kinds, having discussions, and doing direct action trainings, climb trainings, and plant walks. There will be a lot to learn and share, but we will also leave good time for visiting, relaxing, exploring and having fun. See you there!

Stop Cop City: Defend Atlanta Forest! Tuesday morning 2/21, nearly a dozen protesters held signs outside of the Atlas Technical Consultants office on Knight Ln in Williston, VT. Atlas Technical Consultants is a national engineering firm with ties to the Cop City project that is destroying the Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta, Georgia.

"Cop City is the latest escalation in the militarization of policing in the United States, so protecting the Weelaunee Forest from development is not just an Atlanta issue, but one that impacts us all. If this Cop City is built, others will follow, and that at a time when the police are comitting one in every twenty homicides," said Geri, one of protesters at Atlas' offices.

Cop City is a proposed $90+ million, 300+ acre hypermilitarized police training complex that would be the largest police training facility in the U.S., complete with a mock city where police would train with fi****ms, tear gas, helicopters, and explosive devices. Despite the majority of residents opposing the development, the Atlanta Police Foundation has continued to push the project, spurring forest defenders to erect permanent encampments in Weelaunee. On January 18, 2023, 26-year-old Manuel "Tortuguita" Teran was shot and killed during a raid, making them one of the first Forest Defenders murdered by police in the United States.

After Williston police threatened the group with arrest for tresspassing, they then moved with the banner to Church Street in downtown Burlington, outside of Chase Bank. JP Morgan Chase is one of the financial backers of the Atlanta Police Foundation, which is the primary organization driving the creation of Cop City.

This action is part of a Week of Solidarity to stop Cop City, defend the Weelaunee, and honor Tortuguita! Learn more about Stop Cop City solidarity: www.stopcopcitysolidarity.org

"So many of our sisters are missing," said Mama Julz. "We have so many sisters that have disappeared or been killed because of the oil industry. We have so many daughters that get taken from us and sold into s*x traffic, because of the oil industry."

Beverly Little Thunder is a Standing Rock Tribal member and a resident of Vermont. She urged the crowd to continue to protest the operations of TD Bank. She said it’s inappropriate for the state of Vermont to deposit short term funds in this bank.

“Our money going into these banks helps support them, helps them give more money to people who aren’t thinking about the environment, who aren’t thinking about the future, who aren’t thinking about the water that our children and grandchildren are going to drink.”

LAST NIGHT dear friends of ours, who have organized and taken action against the Vermont Gas pipeline here at home, were attacked alongside thousands of others by the cops out at Standing Rock. Hundreds have been injured by rubber bullets, tear gas, mace, water cannons (in below-freezing temperatures, causing dozens of cases of severe hypothermia), and concussion gr***des. One of our comrades had her arm blown open by a gr***de and had to be flown to another state for emergency surgery. At least 19 others were hospitalized as well. DON'T BE PASSIVE IN THIS MOMENT--TAKE ACTION:

(1) Donate to Oceti Sakowin camp: https://www.paypal.me/OcetiSakowinCamp

(2) Mail supplies to medics on the ground: https://medichealercouncil.com/donate/

(3) Organize a solidarity action near you that puts tangible pressure on these targets: https://nodaplsolidarity.org/targets/

(4) Take these lessons to heart: Understand that ongoing colonization on this continent is inextricably connected to endless war, mass incarceration, and global poverty. Commit to staying in movement to dismantle these systems for the long haul, and keep fighting together.
