We are so proud of our very own Eliza Filler for having her beautifully written piece posted on Elevated Locals! This piece was written in reflection of last year's Power Through Powder. Please take some time to read about how the fundraiser impacts our athletes!

Trekking is a void for questions without clear answers. Uncertainty tests me, highlighting the risk of each step into the unknown. The ridges of an open pathway mold into ungroomed terrain, and my skis softly crunch onto fresh snow. Refuge prevails in my connectedness to falling flakes of snow. &

The first time I experienced what it was like to ski with a pack of badass women was my inaugural year of Ski Magazine’s annual ski test, some 15 years ago. I walked into the test corral intimidated as hell—they being ex-U.S. Ski Teamers and the like—but from the minute we got off the lift, it...

Our Story

Once upon a time, way back in 2016, some strong ladies* sat in the audience of a ski and snowboard film festival and noticed that there was not a single female-identifying person in any of the videos on the screen in front of them. Determined not to let it happen again, they set out to create their own edit. When they talked to all of the other rad lady shredders in their lives, they realized they were all tired of this exhausting, male-dominated culture that prevailed in the sports they loved. The idea to create an edit then grew into a club of incredible female-identifying skiers and riders at the University of Vermont (UVM).

Within a few years, Chicks on Sticks went from a small group of women meeting in the comfy chairs on the first floor of the Davis Center to a Student Government Association (SGA) recognized club with over seventy members attending weekly meetings. Our focus shifted from creating an edit to promoting access and equity in the outdoors. From coordinating rides to mountains, backcountry skiing and raising money for nonprofits or running mentorship programs, Chicks on Sticks VT continues to bring people together to do what they love most - spending time outside, sliding on snow.

*COSVT frequently uses terms like female, woman, chicks and ladies. Our members understand the historical significance of these words and find empowerment in reclaiming them. While we have intentionally created spaces to empower female-identifying people, COSVT recognizes and celebrates transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming people. We stand united with the LGBTQ community in the intersectional fight against oppressive systems. The mission of COSVT is elevated by our male-identifying allies who are also harmed by patriarchal and sexist systems. In order to create affinity spaces we reserve certain opportunities for people who have been marginalized based on their gender identity. We welcome anyone who believes in our mission and values to attend our events and participate in our work.
