Pathways Vermont

Pathways Vermont A non-profit organization working to end homelessness and provide innovative mental health alternatives

Pathways Vermont is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supports people to live and thrive in the community at times in their lives when they are most distressed: when they are struggling with thoughts of suicide, are experiencing homelessness, incarceration, institutionalization, mental health struggles or substance use challenges. Pathways Vermont is the first and largest Housing First organi

zation in Vermont, providing permanent housing without requirements or barriers. This evidence based model has been proven to be the most successful approach to ending and preventing homelessness. Through our Housing First programs, we serve people struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues, as well as veterans, families, and people coming out of correctional facilities and other institutions. We use a peer-supported alternative approach to mental health in which individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges guide and aid those experiencing similar challenges. From our Community Center that provides peer support in a friendly setting, to our Soteria House which supports people experiencing mental health crises for the first time, to our 7 days/week, non-judgemental phone Support Line, our programs have an immeasurable impact on the everyday lives of our neighbors in need. Since our inception in 2010, Pathways Vermont has succeeded in:

Housing more than 500 individuals, including 180 children
Helping 75 people find employment
Completing 28,842 supportive phone conversations
Preventing 1,122 instances of use of emergency services

Stories of Resilience: Meet Jamie

Jamie has lived in Addison County for nearly three decades. Three years ago, after separating from his wife, he found himself experiencing homelessness.

“I was a builder,” Jamie said. “Built houses my whole life.” Now, Jamie receives disability income, but it isn’t enough to cover the cost of stable housing. During his first couple of years experiencing homelessness, Jamie struggled to find the support and resources he needed. That changed a little over a year ago, when he connected with Pathways Vermont’s Rural Outreach Program and Services team.

Within a week of working with Pathways, Jamie received support securing a housing voucher and getting on multiple waiting lists, something he didn’t even know was possible before. “I wouldn’t have made it this far without Pathways,” he said.

Still, the waiting is hard. Jamie is actively viewing apartments and following up on leads, but many options have fallen through. He says he isn’t trying to be picky, but many of the places simply haven’t been livable. “The hardest part of my experience with homelessness is the not knowing. It seems like after things start moving and you think you’re doing okay, it’s radio silence,” Jamie explains. “If I had to describe my experience with homelessness in a few words, I would say, ‘I’m over it.’”

Throughout it all, Pathways has remained a constant. One moment that stands out to Jamie happened right before Christmas. He wasn’t in a good place, and Melissa, his Pathways service coordinator, showed up at his door. “She loaded me into the car and brought me to my mother’s,” Jamie said. “I would have missed Christmas with my family if it weren’t for Melissa. My mom was so happy she was in tears,” Jamie remembers...

Stories of Resilience: Meet Mike

When I met Mike, I immediately sensed his warmth. He greeted me with a kind smile, his easygoing energy filling the room. As we sat down to talk, his kitten moved around my legs, inspecting me, shy but curious. It was clear that Mike cherishes his space. “I can finally relax,” he would later tell me. “I can be myself.”

Mike moved to Vermont over 20 years ago to care for his mother. For ten years, he was her caregiver. But when she passed in 2015, he had nowhere to go. He became homeless.

He found housing a few times, but loneliness made it hard to hold on to. Twice, he was evicted for taking in friends who had nowhere else to go. The third time he lost his home, he ended up on the streets of Burlington in winter.

For two months, he struggled to survive. “I nearly froze to death,” he says. Hunger became a constant companion. “I was eating out of the trash,” he remembers. “When you’re starving, you’ll do anything to eat. But the worst part wasn’t the cold or the hunger. The worst part was how I was treated. I knew in my heart I deserved better.”

He eventually found shelter in a motel, where he lived for a year before connecting with Pathways Vermont’s Housing First Team. “Thank God for Pathways,” he says. With their support, he searched for apartments, navigated paperwork, and advocated for his needs. Finding housing wasn’t easy – units went fast, and because of his disability, he needed a first-floor apartment. When one rental opportunity after another fell through, Mike and his team didn’t give up. “I just tried to stay positive.”

Pathways Vermont offices are closed today in recognition of Juneteenth. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, two years after President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved Black people in Texas finally learned of their freedom.

At Pathways Vermont, we aim to cultivate communities and spaces where we openly address the impacts of white supremacy and racism, particularly focusing on the areas of mental health, economic justice, and housing justice. We are committed to the ongoing work of dismantling white supremacy - and we understand that this work is truly ongoing.

We recognize that multiple systems of oppression, including white supremacy, colonialism, economic injustice, sanism, and ableism, are barriers to achieving our mission. Because of this, we are committed to building inclusive, equitable, and universally accessible communities, which is representative of Pathways’ core values.

We understand that our commitment requires the continuous work of daily action, reflection, confronting inequities, and challenging narratives. We practice this in many ways, including monthly training for all staff members with a rotating curriculum that aims to support the complex and dynamic topics of equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
