This month, we want to take a deep dive into four different eating disorder diagnoses to shed light on information you may not already know. Let's start with Anorexia Nervosa (AN).

While AN is probably the most talked about eating disorder, it is actually not the most common. Despite the fact that it has the highest mortality rate of any other mental illness, there are still many misconceptions about the disease.

Did you already know the facts above? Which ones surprised you? We'd love to hear in the comments! ⤵️

We are proud to say that our approach is data driven, and our results don't lie: patients overall fare better in their recovery and with their general mental health after participating in our PHP or IOP programs. 🙌

Whether it's tracking trends in our patients' eating disorder behaviors using the Change in Eating Disorder Symptoms scale (CHEDS) or the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) or keeping up to date with our patients' co-occurring conditions such as anxiety using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7), we rely on data to inform our approach both therapeautically and dietetically. 🌾

With these tried and true tools, we can be sure to offer care that makes a difference in our patients' lives. 🫶

Blending their backgrounds in dietetics and academia, the Kahms take a data-informed approach to eating disorder treatment that is successful for patients of all diagnoses. Want to learn more about the Kahms? Send us a DM! 💌

We are here to remind you that everyone with an eating disorder is worthy of care. You don't need to get sicker to deserve help. This line of thinking may come from a lack of understanding about the seriousness of an eating disorder diagnosis, from working with healthcare professionals who don't have education in identifying or treating eating disorders, and even from disordered thinking.

Feeling stuck or ambivalent about treatment for an eating disorder is normal. You can challenge the disordered voice by seeking support early, or reach out for an evalutation and to ask questions if you aren't sure what to think or how to assess what is going on with you.

We put together a visual “Recovery Backpack” to name some tools that can help teens or college students feel a little more confident as they prepare to go back to school. It’s not a treatment plan, but it is a framework we can use to start conversations about what it looks like to feel emotionally equipped for the new academic year.

We hope you use it or share it with clients or families as a way to explore how these transitions are impacting people!

We get frequent questions about how BCA is used and why it matters, we hope this helps clarify it's role in recovery from an eating disorder.

Body composition analysis (BCA) might sound like a weight-focused tool, but it’s not about aesthetics or size. At The Kahm Center, we think of BCA as a way to understand how the body is functioning and recovering at a cellular level.

This assessment measures markers like skeletal muscle, cellular hydration, and extracellular fluid, which can provide insight into:
• How the body has responded to undernourishment
• Protein needs to support metabolic and physical recovery
• Bone health risk
• Shifts in water retention that can occur during refeeding
• How the body is adapting to changes in nutrition and activity

BCA gives us data that supports safe, effective nourishment, NOT goals related to shape or weight.

Recovery is about more than biology. Body image, co-occurring concerns, and lived experience matter too. BCA is one piece of a much larger picture. Not everything that measures the body reinforces diet culture.

In every era and culture, standards of appearance have shaped how we perceive ourselves and others. Let's look more closely at beauty standards.

We often hear questions about what metabolic testing actually measures, when it’s useful, and whether it’s appropriate to incorporate into care for individuals with eating disorders. At The Kahm Center, we use it as a tool for medical nutrition therapy, NOT weight management, and it is just one of the ways we bring objectivity and nuance to the care we provide.
