Learning about eating disorders is foundational to offering meaningful support. When you understand the psychological complexity of these illnesses, you're less likely to fall into simplistic thinking or offer "solutions" that don't address the actual problem. Eating disorders are not choices about food. They are serious mental illnesses with biological, psychological, and social components. Recognizing this fundamentally changes how you approach someone who is struggling.

Gratitude practices can feel complicated during the holidays, especially when you're in recovery or navigating a difficult relationship with food and your body. If traditional gratitude prompts don't land right now, that's okay. Gratitude doesn't have to be performative or forced. It can be quiet, small, or even just acknowledging that you're still here.

If you feel like sharing what you're grateful for this year, we'd love to hear it. And if you don't, that's valid too.

There's going to be a lot of negative talk about food and eating habits over the next couple of months. Judgements about "overeating", "indulging", "being bad" and more. Making food choices a moral issue and attaching shame to celebration and cultural traditions, culminating in the glorification of compensatory behaviors that we label as resolutions.

You may not be able to stop others from making comments, but you can commit to being mindful about what you say! If this resonates, share it with someone who might need the reminder too.

The diet industry in the United States accounts for over 70 billion dollars annually. Frequent dieting is also a risk factor for an eating disorder, with 35% of "normal" dieters progressing to pathological dieting, and of those, 20-25% developing partial or full-syndrome eating disorders (from EDHope).

The next time you feel shame around your food choices, remember to ask yourself who really benefits from that.

Last but certainly not least, let's talk about Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).

This eating disroder is gaining traction in the mental health world as new reserach emerges. ARFID is more than just being a picky eater, and it doesn't just affect children. Aversions to food can lead to serious adverse health outcomes, making ARFID a serious eating disorder.

This week, we'll dive into Binge Eating Disorder (BED).

This eating disorder is the most commonly diagnosed in the United States as well as in the United Kingdom. That being said, it is often wrongly overlooked as "less serious" because people with BED are often in average or larger bodies.

Food policing may take different forms throughout recovery. It can be expressed through external comments or behaviors, and it can show up internally as deeply ingrained habits of self-surveillance. Identifying the source makes it easier to understand how to respond. Over time, that clarity can help shift the pattern and reduce its influence.

The phrase “food police” is often used in recovery spaces to describe judgmental, rule-driven thinking about eating. Let's take a look at what this looks like in ED recovery

Let's keep learning together! This week, we're taking a closer look at Bulimia Nervosa (BN).

Contrary to popular belief, bulimia is not a less serious eating disorder simply because many people with bulimia are not at dangerously low body weights. The complications from this eating disorder can be serious and deadly.

This month, we want to take a deep dive into four different eating disorder diagnoses to shed light on information you may not already know. Let's start with Anorexia Nervosa (AN).

While AN is probably the most talked about eating disorder, it is actually not the most common. Despite the fact that it has the highest mortality rate of any other mental illness, there are still many misconceptions about the disease.

Did you already know the facts above? Which ones surprised you? We'd love to hear in the comments! ⤵️
