Did you know there are different types of attention?
After a brain injury, many people struggle with focus—but not always in the same way.

Here are 3 key types of attention SLPs often work on:

🧠 Sustained Attention → Staying focused on one task for a long time (like reading a book)
🧠 Selective Attention → Ignoring distractions to focus on one thing (like talking in a noisy room)
🧠 Divided Attention → Multitasking between activities (like cooking while on the phone)

If daily tasks suddenly feel overwhelming after injury or illness, speech therapy can help.

What does independence look like for you or someone you love?

For many adults, it starts with having the voice to ask for help—or the strength to share a story.

This month, we’re celebrating the role speech therapy plays in restoring confidence and communication.

Ever heard of Semantic Feature Analysis?

It’s a speech therapy technique that helps individuals with aphasia find the right word—by describing it. 🍎

We break down a word into its key features:
▶️ What does it look like?
▶️ What’s it used for?
▶️ Where do you find it?
▶️ What category is it in?

By exploring the meaning, we help the brain reconnect the dots. It’s simple, powerful, and effective.

“So you just teach people how to talk, right?”
…Not exactly.

As a speech-language pathologist, I hear these questions all the time:
🙋‍♀️ “So you work with kids?”
🙋 “You’re in schools?”
🙋‍♂️ “You fix lisps?”
🙋 “You do swallowing therapy too?”

The truth?
👉 I help adults communicate, think clearly, and eat safely after stroke, brain injury, or illness.

It’s speech therapy—but it’s also so much more.

Independence looks different for everyone.

For some of our clients, it means speaking with confidence. For others, it means safely eating a meal without worry.

Speech therapy supports each of these goals—because we believe everyone deserves the chance to live fully and freely.

Three girls, one front seat, and a whole lot of love. 💕

Some days, adventures look like rain-soaked errands with a lap full of baby and a backseat full of dog hair.

But honestly? Wouldn’t have it any other way.

The baby milestones nobody tells you about...

That last little hiccup.
I just realized Avery doesn’t hiccup like she used to—and I didn’t even notice when it stopped.

It’s funny how the smallest things sneak up on you. Not a big celebration. No calendar moment. Just a quiet shift into a new phase.

Mamas—what’s a baby milestone that caught you off guard?

🗽 This July, we're celebrating every kind of independence.

For adults, independence isn’t just about doing things on your own. It’s about having the confidence to speak up, make decisions, and stay connected to the people and world around you.

In our newest blog, we explore how speech therapy supports independence—through clearer speech, better thinking, safer meals, and more confident communication.

The most surprising thing I’ve discovered since becoming a mom?

That I can run on WAY less sleep than I ever imagined.

I’m talking “barely enough to function but still chasing a toddler around” kind of energy.

What’s the thing you’ve surprised yourself with in motherhood? Drop it below. I bet you’re stronger than you give yourself credit for.

A question I hear all the time:
“Is this just normal aging—or should I be concerned?”

Here’s a quick breakdown of when it’s time to take a closer look:

🔹 Memory Loss
✔️ Normal: Misplacing items or repeating stories
🚩 Concern: Forgetting medication or getting lost

🔹 Language
✔️ Normal: Words on the tip of your tongue
🚩 Concern: Frequent word-finding trouble, stalled sentences

🔹 Cognitive Skills
✔️ Normal: Slower with new tasks
🚩 Concern: Struggling with everyday tasks like cooking or laundry

If you’re unsure, trust your gut—and don’t hesitate to talk to a professional. Early support makes a difference.
