Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help all aspects of women’s health—Including regulating menstrual cycles.
One of Caitlin’s patients was coming to her for help with her shoulder pain and stress. After a short while into treating her, the patient confided that she hadn’t had a period for several months and there was no chance for pregnancy. The patient shared that she had talked with her doctor about her missed period worried that there may be an underlying health issue. The doctor’s suggestion was to go on birth control pills to see if that would induce a period. This was something the patient wasn’t fully interested in.
As explained by Caitlin, “The patient had been doing great with acupuncture in the past, so we hadn’t discussed Chinese herbal medicine yet. We decided it would be worth it for her to try an herbal formula for ‘tonifying or nourishing’ and ‘moving blood.’ I saw her again a few weeks later and she was ecstatic that she got her period! She had never considered herself a “low energy” person but reported back she was even feeling more energized. She had no idea what traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) could help with and now has another “tool in her toolbox” for health concerns when she wasn’t sure who else to turn to.”
Regulating menstrual periods is just one aspect to women’s health that acupuncture and Chinese medicine can address. Other conditions commonly treated in the clinic include:
• Painful periods
• PCOS
• Endometriosis
• Menstrual migraines
• Fertility and IVF support
• Menopausal symptoms
• PMS and PMDD
• Pregnancy

Our practitioners love gua sha and cupping!

Gua sha and cupping are fantastic add-ons to your acupuncture treatments. They are a couple of Caitlin’s favorite modalities and here’s why.

“They are great for ‘moving qi and blood’ which helps with boosting circulation, reducing pain, and sometimes digging up stuck emotions. The results of acupuncture typically peak in about a 12–48-hour window after the session, but the feeling of pain reduction after cupping or gua sha can be immediate. It is incredibly rewarding when I can see my patients feel better immediately and these modalities can combine with acupuncture in such a beautiful way to do just that.”

Wrong! Bloodletting is a therapeutic modality in Chinese medicine. And no, it doesn’t involve leeches!

I don’t know about you… but before I went to Chinese medical school, when I heard the term “bloodletting,” thoughts of medieval medicine that included leeches, bowls of blood, and bleeding patients within an inch of their life came to mind. And of course, it was reinforced by ridiculous skits performed on Saturday Night Live by Steve Martin and Gilda Radner in the “Theodoric of York—Medieval Barber.” (Yep, I’m that old)

All kidding aside, bloodletting is a traditional modality in Chinese medicine indicated in certain situations and is still being used and researched today. Health conditions where bloodletting is indicated are:
• Swelling and edema in the legs, feet, hands, etc.
• Gout or arthritis
• Severe acute cases of pneumonia
• Chronic low back pain
• Acute strokes
• High fevers

Worried about the blood? The amount of blood that is let is minimal. A drop or two from superficial veins at the puncture site, needled by a small gauge lancet, is all that is therapeutically necessary.

And yes, patients benefit from it! As explained by Caitlin Piacentini, L.Ac., who was treating an older gentleman’s swollen feet with bloodletting. “After his first session of bloodletting, the swelling in his feet was completely gone and never came back. He was astounded! Every time he came in again from then on, he would have me look at other areas of his hands, legs, etc. to see if they indicated bloodletting as a treatment”. Going forward, Caitlin has used and recommended bloodletting to her patients regularly for all kinds of ailments.
