Chances are you have experienced stress this year. My guess is that sugar has not been too far behind, but ๐˜„๐—ต๐˜† ๐—ฑ๐—ผ ๐˜„๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ฅ๐—”๐—ฉ๐—˜ ๐˜€๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜€ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ฒโ€™r๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฑ? Thereโ€™s a combination of things happening in our brain and body. Our brain accounts for merely 2% of our body weight, yet our brain consumes HALF our daily carb requirements. When under stress, the brain requires about 12% more energy, leading many of us to reach for sugary snacks and treats, since sugar is the quickest energy source. Sugar releases the mood-boosting hormone, serotonin. As a result, the brain develops a behavioral pattern that says, โ€œeat this, and youโ€™ll feel better.โ€ Eating sugar also releases the happy hormone, dopamine, which makes you feel good. That feeling can be addictive. Sugar cravings can also be caused by imbalances in blood glucose levels. For example, low blood sugar might cause you to crave something sweet. ๐—œ๐—ป ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ผ ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜† ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ๐˜…๐—ถ๐—ฐ!

โ€ข ๐—˜๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ป. Be sure to include healthy protein in every meal. Protein helps balance blood sugar and insulin levels. You can get plenty of protein from plants!
โ€ข ๐—˜๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜€. When your body has enough nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, your cravings for sweets will be reduced. Sometimes our cravings are really a craving for nutrients. Try eating some vegetables/fruits before reaching for a cookie.
โ€ข ๐—š๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ต ๐˜€๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ. A lack of sleep causes the hunger-stimulating hormone, ghrelin, to increase, causing you to dive into sugary treats. Plus, a lack of sufficient sleep will cause a decrease in the level of leptin, an appetite suppressing hormone.
โ€ข ๐——๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ต ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ. Drinking half your body weight in ounces of water daily is recommended. Drinking water in between meals is better than with your meals, because when consuming a lot of water during meals it will dilute the stomach acid needed for digestion.

Food is packed with nutrients and has the power to nourish and heal us. When the food we eat disagrees with our body (๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€), it can lead to pain, fatigue, digestive issues and more.
