Todays Case Study:
Herniated Disc Recovery Without Surgery
Christian came to our office with severe back pain from a herniated disc confirmed by MRI. He experienced sciatic pain down one leg, difficulty walking, and was unable to lie in bed—resorting to sleeping on the floor for relief.
Based on his MRI findings, he was a strong candidate for surgery, and I explained that surgery might be the most appropriate option. However, Christian was determined to explore conservative care first.
We began a treatment plan that included laser therapy (photobiomodulation) and gentle chiropractic adjustments. Laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation at the cellular level. Over time, this allows the body to heal naturally.
Christian’s recovery was gradual but consistent. After 4 months of care, he was able to function again. We then added home exercises and reduced his office visits. At the 1-year mark, he reported being 98% better.
Evidence supports this approach: in many studies, 60%-90% of patients with lumbar disc herniation (even large herniations) recover with conservative treatment. Pain Physician
Also, in a large trial, up to 90% of patients with sciatica from a lumbar disc herniation improve without surgery within 4 months when given appropriate nonsurgical care. New England Journal of Medicine
While surgery is sometimes necessary, many herniated disc cases respond well to non-surgical approaches. Conservative care can provide lasting relief without the risks and recovery time associated with surgery.
