What you should know about Chemical Service Clients
As a Head Spa practitioner, you must know how to assess clients who recently received chemical services (bleach, relaxer, perm, or texturizer). These services alter the hair’s internal structure and can leave it weak, fragile, and prone to breakage. Safety always comes before service, even if the client wants immediate results.
Key Rule to Remember
If a client had chemical work within the last 5–10 days, they must wait at least 3 weeks (21 days) before a Head Spa. This allows the hair to:
• Regain elasticity & strength
• Stabilize pH
• Re-seal the cuticle
• Reduce breakage risk
Why This Is Important
Head Spa techniques open the cuticle and expand the hair shaft through hydration and steam. When performed on freshly chemically treated hair, it can lead to:
• Breakage
• Gummy, stretchy texture
• Excessive shedding
• Long-term damage
Clients may also assume the most recent service caused the damage — which could reflect back on you.
Quality of Previous Chemical Work Matters
Some clients will come in with hair that still looks:
• Smooth, hydrated, strong, full
This typically indicates a skilled chemical professional.
Others may arrive with:
• Dry, brittle, crispy hair
• High porosity
• Uneven texture
• Stretchy “gummy” strands
This reflects improper or unsafe chemical work.
You are not judging — you are evaluating for safety.
