The origins of Father's Day are a testament to the enduring love and appreciation we hold for fathers everywhere. This special day, dedicated to celebrating paternal bonds, fatherhood, and the influence of fathers in society, began to take root over a century ago.
It was in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910, that the very first Father's Day celebration took place, largely thanks to the remarkable efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd. Inspired by Anna Jarvis's work in establishing Mother's Day, and keenly aware of her own loving father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent, Sonora envisioned a similar day to honor fathers. Her tireless advocacy led to the initial observance in her home state.
While it took some time for the idea to gain widespread recognition, its sentiment resonated deeply. Over the decades, the concept spread across the nation. Finally, on April 24, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation officially designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.
Today, as we celebrate Father's Day on this Sunday, June 15, 2025, we not only honor the incredible fathers in our lives but also acknowledge the profound historical journey of this cherished holiday. It’s a day to recognize the sacrifices, guidance, and unwavering support that fathers provide, echoing the very spirit that inspired its creation over a hundred years ago.
