Our tip for you today: Get plenty of good quality sleep! Unfortunately, many older people struggle to get adequate sleep every night, often because of pain due to health complications or medicines they are prescribed.

Sleep quality is crucial for memory, concentration, and mood. There have been a number of studies done on the connection between sleep and poor health outcomes. In a study of adults over 65, poor sleep quality caused difficulties in problem-solving and concentrating. Another study of nearly 8,000 people showed that sleeping six hours or less a night in their 50s and 60s increased the risk of developing dementia later in life. Inadequate sleep is linked to the buildup of beta-amyloid, a protein involved in Alzheimer's. Also, poor sleep can also worsen depression symptoms in older adults.

If you're struggling to sleep well, it's time for a visit to our clinic! We will be happy to help you figure out the reasons for your sleep issues and provide you with a referral to a sleep specialist if needed.

In the past two decades, su***de rates have been consistently higher in rural America than in urban America. Between 2000-2020, su***de rates increased 46% in non-metro areas compared to 27.3% in metro areas. For people living in rural areas, the stigma around getting mental health help, geographical isolation, and poverty are just some of the factors in this high rate.

If you are struggling, it's time to reach out and get the help you need. Physicians Care offers the mental health care you need in a family clinic setting. You simply call and make an appointment with our clinic just like you would for any other health concern you have. Our licensed independent clinical social worker, Rachel Bradford, is here to support you and get you through any mental health struggles you are facing. During National Su***de Prevention Week, it is important to understand the statistics and facts about depression and su***de. Being aware of the warning signs that are usually present in someone with suicidal tendencies can help you look out for your friends and family members' mental health. A change in behavior or the emergence of new behaviors is a red flag to watch out for. If this change is related to a painful event, loss, or change, it is of even greater concern. Most people who consider taking their lives exhibit one or more warning signs, through their words or actions.

If you yourself are suffering from suicidal thoughts, it's time to seek help immediately. Call or text the 988 Su***de & Crisis Hotline for 24/7 immediate help from a mental health professional.

If you or someone you love need ongoing mental health services, please call our clinic to set up an appointment with our caring and compassionate Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, Rachel Bradford.

Tip #3 for : Eat plenty of green, leafy veggies! Over a period of five years, a study of nearly 1,000 older adults found a significant correlation between the consumption of green, leafy vegetables and slower cognitive decline. Some delicious options are kale, spinach, Swiss chard, collard greens, and mustard greens.

Here's tip #2 for : Stay up to date on your vaccines! Besides the annual flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine, which is recommended for all adults, older adults need a few more vaccines to stay healthy:

• If you are 50 years old or above, it is recommended to get vaccinated against shingles, which causes a painful rash that can last for several months.

• If you are 65 or older, it is important to get vaccinated against pneumococcal disease. This disease can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, and blood infections.

Getting vaccinated is really important, especially for older folks. As we age, our immune systems tend to weaken, which can make it tough for our bodies to fight off infections. So, getting vaccinated can help give our immune systems the boost they need to stay healthy and strong! If you need to get your vaccinations, give us a call to make an appointment or just walk in for a same-day visit!
