Our tip for you today: Get plenty of good quality sleep! Unfortunately, many older people struggle to get adequate sleep every night, often because of pain due to health complications or medicines they are prescribed.
Sleep quality is crucial for memory, concentration, and mood. There have been a number of studies done on the connection between sleep and poor health outcomes. In a study of adults over 65, poor sleep quality caused difficulties in problem-solving and concentrating. Another study of nearly 8,000 people showed that sleeping six hours or less a night in their 50s and 60s increased the risk of developing dementia later in life. Inadequate sleep is linked to the buildup of beta-amyloid, a protein involved in Alzheimer's. Also, poor sleep can also worsen depression symptoms in older adults.
If you're struggling to sleep well, it's time for a visit to our clinic! We will be happy to help you figure out the reasons for your sleep issues and provide you with a referral to a sleep specialist if needed.
