Parkinson’s Awareness Month | April
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement—and often communication and swallowing as well.
🧠 What is Parkinson’s disease?
Parkinson’s disease impacts the brain’s ability to control movement, leading to changes in motor function that can affect speech, voice, language, and swallowing over time.
🗣️ Communication challenges may include:
Reduced vocal loudness or monotone voice

Slurred or unclear speech

Rapid or rushed speech

Difficulty starting or maintaining conversation

Changes in facial expression (“masked” facial affect)

🥄 Swallowing challenges may include:
Coughing or choking during meals

Difficulty chewing or moving food safely

Increased risk for aspiration

Speech-language pathologists play a vital role in supporting individuals with Parkinson’s disease to maintain communication, safety, and quality of life.
