Stillwater Hospice Butte

Stillwater Hospice Butte Stillwater Hospice in Butte, Montana honors and respects the sacred process that is end-of-life care.

Locally owned, we are redefining hospice care by providing a combination of professional medical care and an outstanding support network designed to meet the needs of our patients and their families. We take the time to educate you on what hospice is, how it benefits those we work with, and how we help make every moment count. Learn more about the Highlands Hospice (now a part of the Stillwater Hospice family) difference. At its most basic, hospice care encompasses the services needed to maintain the comfort and dignity of a person whose life is limited. At Stillwater Hospice, however, we believe hospice care is far more than that. It is the opportunity to compassionately honor life, instill hope, and allow our patients to make the most of the days, weeks and months they may have left to live. Stillwater Hospice services can be provided to terminally ill people wherever they live. This means a patient living in a nursing facility or long-term care facility can receive specialized visits from our nurses, home health aides, chaplains, social workers, and volunteers, in addition to other care and services provided by the nursing facility. Stillwater Hospice professionals and the nursing home have a written agreement in place for the hospice to serve residents of the facility. Hospice care serves those who have any terminal, or life-ending, condition. Therefore, it is appropriate to consider hospice once “curative” treatments—those designed to restore good health—will no longer be used. Once entering hospice, each patient receives an individualized treatment plan reflecting their personal goals, medical needs, and the level of support required. In our experience, hospice care can positively impact a patient’s spouse, partner, and family as much as it does the patient. We can help reduce stress and worry by providing knowledge, structure, and support.

Caring for a loved one can be heavy, especially during the holidays—but allowing yourself rest and gratitude keeps the season gentle and meaningful for everyone.

⭐ Our November Volunteer spotlight - Meet Elizabeth "Wing" Spooner, who has been a volunteer with Stillwater Hospice in Butte, Montana since May of 2022.

Elizabeth had a career in advertising and communications at NW Energy and then for the State of Montana. She is a Threshold Choir member and part of the flower power squad. Elizabeth is currently scheduled to undergo training for our "Walking Each Other Home" 11th hour volunteer program.

Elizabeth says:

"Volunteering is meaningful to me because I feel it is important to give back to my community. I have many blessings for which I am grateful. So, I feel motivated to give joyfully. Ironically, the more I give without expecting anything in return, the more I receive.

Volunteering is personally fulfilling. Singing in the Threshold Choir gives me a chance to contribute to something bigger than myself. Plus, I love to sing. Making and distributing flower arrangements is gratifying because of the sense of connection I experience with the other volunteers and the smiles and gratitude I receive from the clients.

Volunteering is heartwarming and reminds me of how much good I can do, simply by showing up and giving my time.

Little Known Fact: I have raced Corvettes for more than 40 years"

😁 Big smiles and big appreciation for Elizabeth “Wing” Spooner.

🌟 Our November My Why story comes from our Powell, Wyoming agency — meet Kathy Warne.

“My introduction to hospice began in 2009. My dad had melanoma, multiple surgeries, and later mouth cancer that spread into his bone. After chemo, radiation, and everything offered, he said enough. He wanted to go home. As a nurse and his daughter, I was ready to honor that.

The hospice team came in while he was still in the hospital, and we made a plan for him to go home in a day or two. But he never made it. That night, I noticed his breathing slowing. His heart rate was dropping. My 12-year-old daughter was with me. I sent her to find my sister, and I pressed the call light. And waited. No one came.

I stood in the doorway looking for help while call lights rang unanswered. I watched him closely — long pauses between breaths — and finally a CNA came. Still, no nurse. I sat by him, talking to him, singing quietly. He loved show tunes. I think he even chuckled. His heart rate fell into the 30s, his breathing nearly gone. I took the stethoscope off the wall and climbed into bed beside him. At 8:23 pm, I was the last person to hear his heartbeat. I wrote the time on my hand and kept waiting for someone to come.

My why for working in hospice is this: I never want another family to experience that loneliness, uncertainty, or helplessness. I knew what was happening medically, but it took from me the chance to simply be his daughter. And yet, that last quiet hour with him was a gift. I got to be there with my dad.”
