They say in heaven, mothers rock babies that aren’t theirs.

Tiny souls who left this world too soon…
Being held until their own mothers arrive.

I think about that a lot.

The idea that no baby is alone.
That somewhere beyond what we can see, someone is rocking them,
whispering love,
keeping them safe
until their mama gets there.

So if you get there before me…
please hold mine.

Rock them for me.
Tell them their mama loves them more than anything in this world.

And if I get there before you…
I promise I’ll be holding yours.

For more than 30 years, Mari-Kim Bunnell, MD, has cared for patients at Brigham and Women's Hospital OB/GYN. Over the past few years, she’s had the honor of doing so alongside her daughter, Megan Bunnell, MD, a current Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellow, as she trains to follow in her mother’s footsteps.

Mari-Kim and Megan recently worked the night shift together on Labor and Delivery, celebrating three generations of the same family, with the third arriving soon this month!

Please join UMass Memorial Medical Center in congratulating Danielle Ferguson, RN, who was honored with the Josie King Hero Award.

Danielle was nominated for her exceptional leadership, commitment to patient safety, and transformational work in assisting with the redesign of maternity triage.

Through her guidance, the team implemented the Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI), a standardized, evidence-based tool that ensures consistent and accurate assessment of patient acuity.

Danielle's leadership strengthened communication, improved teamwork, and advanced the culture of safety, reflecting the very heart of the Josie King Hero Award: listening, speaking up, preventing harm, and inspiring positive change.

Her achievements were celebrated at a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a milestone in improving the patient experience and ensuring timely, high-quality care for expectant families.

Oh, baby... UMass Memorial Medical Center recently celebrated the arrival of triplets, Akeem (baby C), Elikai (baby B), and Eliana (baby A). The 35-week triplets can be seen here with members of our Labor and Delivery nursing team—Danielle, Beth, Heather, and Jeannie.

In the past, newborns born at 35 weeks were routinely admitted to the NICU. While this approach ensured close monitoring, it often meant that families were separated during those first critical hours and days, impacting early bonding and the family experience.

Through thoughtful review of evidence-based practices and collaboration across teams, our workflows have evolved. Today, many 35-week newborns who are stable and do not require specialized NICU care are able to remain with the birth person and family in the Maternity Center. Our Labor and Delivery team is trained and highly skilled in caring for high-risk births and is dedicated to keeping the birth person and their families safe while providing the highest quality care in every situation.

Highlighting that this change would not be possible without the dedication and growth of our Postpartum Nursing team, who have elevated their practice to safely care for this population within the Maternity Center. Their expanded knowledge and expertise allows families to stay together through the continuum of care, supporting bonding, promoting family-centered care, and enhancing the overall patient experience.

Moments like this highlight the power of teamwork, and a shared commitment to continuously improving the care we provide to families during one of life’s most meaningful milestones.

What a cool story!
