Bursitis is a condition that involves painful swelling in the bursa, a small, fluid-filled sac that cushions tendons and bones near joints. Bursitis often takes place near joints that are involved in repetitive motions. Joints that are commonly affected include the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. Those dealing with bursitis will often report symptoms such as decreased and painful range of motion, tenderness, and weakness. It will be important with early physical therapy intervention to determine the specific cause of the bursitis flare up, and the reasonable changes that could be made to decrease irritation. Physical therapy care will also include pain management, increasing range of motion and strength, and safe return to activity. If you feel you are dealing with new or chronic bursitis, contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center to see how we can help you!

The radius is the most commonly fractured bone in a wrist fracture. This injury typically happens when someone falls on an outstretched arm. There are three types of fractures. Types 1 and 2 usually do not require surgery while type 3 is more involved and typically requires surgery to repair. Once the fracture has healed, the doctor may refer you to physical therapy. During the evaluation, the therapist will assess your pain, range of motion, strength, and functional ability. Based on the evaluation, the therapists will develop a plan that will address your limitations and work towards returning you back to your normal daily activities. Contact your local Baptist Health Therapy center to see how they can help you!

Adhesive capsulitis, also known as frozen shoulder, is a condition in which inflammation causes the shoulder joint to become painful and stiff. Symptoms vary based on the “stage of freezing”, but typically involve dull and aching pain that gets worse with shoulder movement. As frozen shoulder progresses over time, a person may experience decreased shoulder pain but continued limitations with range of motion. The final stage involves a “thawing” of the frozen shoulder, with gradual returns of strength and shoulder range. Frozen shoulder often improves without surgery, and physical therapy plays a large role in restoring movement. Physical therapists are skilled at measuring deficits and tracking progress, and will be able to instruct you on stretches and strengthening exercises to increase shoulder function. If you are experiencing shoulder stiffness and pain that limits your daily activities, contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center for help today!

Spinal stenosis takes place when the space surrounding your spinal cord becomes too narrow, specifically in the neck or lower back. Spinal stenosis often develops slowly and can cause radiating symptoms down the arms or legs. Common symptoms include pain, numbness, and weakness. With low back stenosis you may experience weakness and cramping in the legs, difficulty with prolonged standing or walking, and decreased pain with sitting and leaning forward. Neck stenosis presents slightly differently, with numbness and tingling through the arms, as well as difficulty with hand tasks. Treatment for spinal stenosis largely depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms. While surgery may be necessary for more severe cases, conservative care including physical therapy is typically a warranted first step. Physical therapy will generally involve exercises including core strengthening and flexibility training. Your physical therapist will work to develop an individualized plan of care that addresses not only strength deficits, but return to functional activities as well. If you need help managing spinal stenosis symptoms, please contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center today!

Vertigo is a sudden spinning sensation that can disorient the affected individual. The most common cause of vertigo is benign paroxysmal position vertigo (BPPV), an inner ear disorder. With this type of vertigo, dizziness is triggered by changes in head position such as rolling over in bed, sitting up in bed, or standing up from a chair. BPPV can be caused by falls, head trauma, ear infections, and new medications; most of the time, though, it is idiopathic, or without a known cause. Physical therapists are skilled at detecting and treating BPPV. If you think you are currently experiencing a bout of vertigo, contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center for help today.

The sacroilliac joint, or SI joint, is the joint that is formed between the sacrum and the ilium of the hip and is located on both the left and right sides. SI joint dysfunction can be caused by stiffness on one side of the joint, muscle imbalances, hypermobility of the joint, a fall or injury, and overuse from repetitive activities. SI joint dysfunction symptoms may include:

Sharp, stabbing, or dull pain on one side of your pelvis/low back, groin, or tailbone and pain that may radiate down to the knee
Pain with sit to stand position change, turning over in bed, bending, or twisting.
Tightness and tenderness in the hip/buttock region.
Pain that is worse with walking, standing, and prolonged sitting that is eased by a change of position

Physical therapy can play an important role in helping you achieve pain relief, improve functional ability, and restore any losses in strength and range of motion that you may be experiencing due to SI joint dysfunction. A PT will perform an evaluation and then develop an individualized plan that may include stretching, strengthening, manual treatments, and pain reducing modalities to get you back to your activities. If you are experiencing SI joint dysfunction symptoms, contact your local Baptist Therapy center to see how we can help!
