We know that surgery sounds scary – especially when it comes to children. However, ear tube surgery is the most common surgery for children and helps those who suffer from frequent ear infections.

During the procedure, a small incision is made in the eardrum, any fluid is suctioned out, and the tube is placed in the eardrum. Typically, the tube eventually falls out on its own, and the eardrum heals. It’s important to remember that we would never recommend any surgery it if it wasn’t necessary. While an ear infection may seem like a small health problem, without proper treatment, damage from an ear infection can cause hearing loss or more severe infections to the surrounding areas.

So, if your child is suffering from frequent ear infections, give us a call at (231) 779-6260!

Nosebleeds are very common, especially in children between 2-10 years old, which makes it easy to forget that sometimes a doctor needs to be consulted if they keep happening. While many nosebleeds are caused simply by dry air, sometimes they’re caused by allergies, infections, medications, factures in the nose or at the base of the skull, or even a tumor or other condition.

So, if you or your child does suffer from frequent nosebleeds even after preventative measures have been taken – such as using a humidifier and keeping the child’s nails short – set up an appointment with our ENT, who will examine the inside of the nose to determine if there’s a more serious condition that needs to be addressed.

To set up an appointment, call our office at (231) 779-6260.

When you think about someone snoring, who do you picture? A sweet, young child… or a middle-aged person?

Children aren’t who we usually think of when it comes to snoring or who we think when it comes to anything related to a sleep disorder (other than needing 10 cups of water at bedtime). However, about 10% of children snore regularly, and 2-4% experience obstructive sleep apnea, which is when the airway is blocked repeatedly during sleep.

When a child’s breathing is disrupted during sleep, the body thinks the child is choking. The heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, the brain is aroused, and sleep is disrupted. Oxygen levels in the blood can also drop. Snoring isn’t the only symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing, though. Other symptoms include but are not limited to bedwetting, irritability, and obesity.

Each case of sleep-disordered breathing is different, so the treatment options vary from child to child. If you are concerned about your child, give us a call at (231) 779-6260 to set up an appointment.

Most children in the United States experience at least one episode of tonsillitis, which is the inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils (the lymph glands in the back of the throat that are visible if you look in the mouth).

Symptoms of tonsillitis include but are not limited to a fever, sore throat, bad breath, difficulty swallowing, tender lymph nodes in the neck, fatigue, and white patches or red tonsils. If you or your child has symptoms of tonsillitis, an ENT can help with proper diagnosis.

Tonsillitis can either be bacterial or viral. While viral tonsillitis is typically treated with hydration and pain control, bacterial tonsillitis is treated with antibiotics.

If you or your child has recurring tonsillitis, an ENT may recommend removal of the tonsils.

If you or your child has symptoms of tonsillitis, call our office at (231) 779-6260 to schedule an appointment.
