As people stay home, off of the icy roads and enjoy the holiday season, winter usually brings about a blood shortage for The Red Cross. Michigan also faces a shortage of donations at this time of year because many of our blood donors are retirees, and many of those retirees are snowbirds. So, if you are able to donate blood, we encourage you to find a blood drive near you!

You can find a blood drive near you by visiting https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive

While thyroid disease can impact both men and women, it does impact women at a significantly higher rate than men.

The thyroid produces thyroid hormone, which controls quite a bit in your body – including how fast you burn calories and how fast your heart beats. If you have thyroid disease, your thyroid either is producing too much or too little of this hormone which, in turn, can make you feel tired or make you lose/gain weight.

For women, thyroid disease can also impact periods, pregnancy, and menopause. In fact, symptoms of thyroid disease are sometimes mistaken for menopause symptoms.

Since we’re working to raise awareness about cervical cancer this month for Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, we thought it would be good to highlight in this Women’s Health segment!

While all women are at risk for cervical cancer, it most often occurs in women over the age of 30. And, the most common cause is long-lasting infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a common virus that is passed from one person to another during s*x.

Screening tests and the HPV vaccine can help prevent cervical cancer. If it is found early, cervical cancer can be highly treatable.

It can be difficult to keep Vitamin D levels up during the winter, since we don’t get as much sunshine or spend as much time outdoors!

To help make up for that, try adding it into your food to keep a nutritious diet!

Our phones and Internet issues have been resolved. While the office is still closed, you can now reach the on-call doctor by calling the office at 231-775-9741 and leaving a message for a callback. Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

We are experiencing Internet and phone issues this morning so the clinic will not be open. Unfortunately with no phones, there is no access to the on-call physician. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as we can. We apologize for any inconvenience.

No matter where you live, many times, human trafficking is thought of as something that happens “somewhere else” and “to someone else”. However, due to its border with Canada, many waterways, and various interstate roadways, Michigan is ranked as the state with the 5th highest number of human trafficking cases per year.

This month is a time when we all can learn about the signs of human trafficking and how we can help.

Many soups are a very healthy meal option! Not only do they help keep you hydrated, but they often include multiple food categories (vegetables, meat, fats, grains)! What is your favorite soup to make during these chilly winter months?!

We’d love if you dropped a link to your favorite recipe or shared it in the comments!

Though many people find the start of winter exciting as the holidays approach, the long dark days with less sunshine can impact the body’s natural rhythms. In turn, this can impact your mood, physical health, and mental health.

To help combat some of this, it’s important to eat nutritious foods, engage with your social support system, and exercise. Not only does physical activity provide an outlet for stress, but it helps your body release natural “happy hormones”. Some people also find that meditation – even just for 10 minutes is helpful for their mental health through the winter. If you’re just starting out in meditation, you may find it helpful to use a guided meditation online through YouTube or Pandora.

However, it’s important to remember that while healthy eating, exercise, and meditation can help with mental health – if you are experiencing depression or thoughts of su***de, talk to a medical professional or call/text 988 for immediate help. If you have questions or need more information, give us a call at (231) 775-9741.

*Disclaimer: We don’t give medical advice over social media, and these exercises may not be for everyone. You should always consult with your physician if you have any questions or concerns about your health; or, call 911 in case of an emergency.

The thyroid gland plays an important part of your bodily functions; however, many people don’t know what it does. The thyroid gland plays a major role in the metabolism, growth and development of the human body. It helps regulate quite a few of your regular bodily functions by constantly releasing a steady amount of thyroid hormones into the bloodstream.

While you can have your thyroid checked any time, in honor of Thyroid Awareness Month, we want to encourage you to take a moment to learn more about the thyroid and consider whether you need to have it checked. You can learn about the thyroid gland at: https://www.thyroid.org/thyroid-information/
