Harrison County Health Department - Ohio This is the official page for the Harrison County Ohio's Health Department Our Vision: We aspire to be the leader in population health improvement.

The mission of the Harrison County General Health District Board of Health is to promote and protect the health of individuals and communities. We do this by educating, mobilizing, and collaborating with the public to prevent disease, reduce health disparities, and enhance the quality of life in Harrison County. Through the use of innovative, proactive, and collaborative approaches we will ensure conditions in which all people can be healthy. Harrison County Health Department (HCHD) maintains social media accounts to provide public information and health education. HCHD is committed to maintaining a respectful environment that shares correct information. To do this, a team of staff members reviews comments and posts on pages affiliated with the Health Department or its divisions. Posts and comments may be removed or hidden if they contain:

Back in October, we shared a video from the Harrison Career Center showing their welding students working on our Safe Sharps Disposal Box. This new program is made possible thanks to funding from the Harrison County Community Foundation. We hope to officially launch the program in the coming months. Our staff already have sharps containers at many events and recently gave some to local libraries. We are grateful to work with our community partners, especially our county’s youth. We can’t wait to share more updates soon!

February is American Heart Month. Every year, Americans suffer more than 1.5 million heart attacks and strokes. Do you know the ABCs of Heart Health?

A - Ask your health care professional if aspirin can reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

B - Find out what your blood pressure numbers are and ask your health care professional what those numbers mean for your health. If your blood pressure stays high for a long time, you may suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension).

C - One type of cholesterol is good and can protect you from heart disease while the other is bad and can increase your risk. Talk to your health care professional about cholesterol and how to lower your bad cholesterol if it's too high.

S - Smoking raises your blood pressure which increases your risk for heart attack or stroke. Talk with your health care professional about ways to help you stick with your decision. It's never too late to quit smoking.

Embrace the ABCs of Heart Health this February and beyond to keep your heart happy and healthy.

Covering coughs and sneezes can help prevent the spread of serious respiratory illnesses like influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), whooping cough, and COVID-19. To help stop the spread of germs, remember to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; throw used tissues in the trash; and if you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands. Always wash your hands immediately after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing to prevent the spread of illnesses.

Tomorrow, our Health Commissioner Katie swaps Excel spreadsheets for her best 90s dance moves as she takes the stage for Dancing with the Harrison County Stars! 💃 She can’t promise perfect moves… but she can promise plenty of laughs. We wish her and her two left feet the best of luck! 😆

We may stumble, we may spin… but one thing’s for sure: we always try our best to support our community—on stage, in the office, and everywhere in between!
