What would you do?

A mom reached out recently. Her 3-year-old had the flu. Fevers for four days straight.

The scariest part was that he was getting more and more lethargic.

She was worried he was getting dehydrated and might end up in the hospital.

Would you:

A. Go to the ER because he's getting worse
B. Double-check the dose based on his weight and give it on a schedule
C. Give less than recommended to be "safe"
D. Skip the medicine and just focus on fluids and rest

Correct answer: B

In this case, she was under-dosing for his weight so the fever and discomfort werenโ€™t being managed effectively โ€” and he was getting wiped out.

So we:

โœ… Calculated weight-based dosing
โœ… Built a clear short-term schedule

She texted us back within 4โ€“6 hours: he was back playing again and acting more like himself.

Pain in your upper belly after you eat? It might be gastritis. Here's how to tell if it is:

Typical symptoms are:
1. Pain in the upper belly area.
2. Pain occurs 30-60 minutes AFTER eating.
3. Bloated, feeling full too early.
4. Nausea with vomiting (if it's severe).

Common causes of gastritis are spicy foods, alcohol, processed foods (especially breads and breakfast cereals). As well as OTC aspirin and ibuprofen, these meds can cause damage too when we take them without food.

๐Ÿ‘‰ How to tell if this pain is gastritis = take two tums and wait 30-60 minutes. If you're feeling much better, then it's highly likely that this is gastritis or esophagitis (or both).

BUT that's just a short-term solution to the pain. How do we heal this?

โœ… Stop eating the trigger foods that cause gastritis. Spicy food, alcohol, processed food like bread, pizza crust, and breakfast cereals.

Meet the Doctor

Dr. Leavitt is a board-certified family physician. He received his undergraduate biology degree at University of Utah, his medical degree (DO) at Touro Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine, and his residency training locally at Family Medicine Residency of Idaho. During residency, he, along with his wife and three children, fell in love with the Treasure Valley and the rest of Idaho and decided to put down roots.

He enjoys working in family medicine because of its variety and because of his love for continual learning. Getting to know patients well and promoting healthy lifestyles is deeply important to him. He considers himself a proceduralist and prides himself on his abilities with minor surgery. He is also a hospice director and is committed to the comfort needs of the terminally ill and dying. Dr. Leavitt is also bilingual and aspires to serve more in the Hispanic communities.

When not working, he has a variety of interests that include woodworking, home improvement, gardening, and a host of additional outdoor activities. If wielding a pen, he is more likely to be sketching than writing, and if reading anything other than medical text, he is likely to be learning a new skill. He is known for being handy and is proud of his โ€œMacGyver skills.โ€ He is a very firm believer that laughter is one of THE best medicines.
