Join us MONDAY, Sep 15 at 6pm at our gracious host, Bluff Creek Distillery & 18 Acres Lounge at 10 S Main!

Our community book club is gathering again, and you’re invited! This week, we’ll be talking about Chapter 10: “Reject Everything New” and Chapter 11: “Keep Outsiders Out.” Doug Griffiths reminds us that communities don’t fail overnight—they slowly decline when they refuse to welcome new ideas or new people.

These chapters challenge us to think about how Caldwell can stay open to innovation while remaining true to our roots, and how welcoming newcomers strengthens—not threatens—our way of life.

Whether you’ve read every chapter or just want to listen in, your perspective is valuable. Come join the conversation as we imagine together how to keep Caldwell vibrant, welcoming, and forward-looking.

This was one of the discussions at the “13 ways” book club last night. How to know what’s going on before it happens. We discussed current efforts and future solutions. Here’s another idea:

Coffee and Calendars
Author Debra Brown

It’s the antidote to “I wish I’d known about that!”
Ever find out about an event or project in your town only after it was happening?

Ever wish you could have helped with something or offered some insight, if you only knew it was coming?

You want to collaborate more with local and regional organizations, but you can’t possibly know everything that’s going on.

Even in a small town, we don’t keep each other informed like you’d think.

Here’s the simple solution:
Why not just get folks together and compare organization calendars once a month or so?

Keep it simple:
Invite some local people to coffee.
Ask them to bring their groups’ calendars.
Go somewhere together and get some coffee.
Let each person go over their group’s calendar and tell what they have going on.
That’s all. Just share coffee and calendars.

We've heard great results from Coffee and Calendars gatherings from Wall, South Dakota, Ringgold County, Iowa and this one in Webster City, Iowa. Photo by Becky McCray

Who to invite:
Start with people who are part of any organizations related to your ideas. Think of arts or history groups, town or county government, the chamber of commerce, or schools. You can start with a few and grow over time. Reach out to all kinds of community groups, local boards, churches, organizations, clubs, and everyone. Have them bring their calendars, too.

Get out of the meeting room! Go grab coffee from a local coffee shop or get cool drinks at the soda fountain. Go anywhere that feels friendly and open to conversations.

Living in the Past — “Turtle Wars” & Cow Town are fun to celebrate now. Jeff voiced a nice tribute to KanOkla, and we discussed the past and how the company was enticed to move their headquarters to Caldwell in 1991 by persuasive and resourceful Caldwell businessmen. What other headquarters can we relocate to Caldwell?

A recurring mention at all the meetings is a better online presence. Virtual tours are needed, adapting new technologies. A new resident to Caldwell from Las Vegas joined the conversation and had lots to share!

A good discussion on our shareable community events Google calendar, a central location for a calendar on monitors around town, and our email blast to let people know about events and happenings in town.

Housing downsizing for seniors was a good discussion. Linda Quillin shared her great decision to move to Friendship Village. $0 taxes & insurance, $0 yardwork, her kids didn’t want her stuff and our kids won’t want ours either, she advised. Currently, the friendship Village has 3 openings, a very unusual occurrence since there is typically a waiting list. Call Paul. $300/mo.

The seniors enjoy socializing and would love for more people to share their space at the Senior Center. Great food, big portions, and they are excited for Mark’s offer to help them with PR.

Pop-up shops for experimenting with new business ideas was discussed. Ice cream seemed to be the theme of the night!

We had representation from the first and last classes of the Boomer generation at the meeting. It was nice realization of how many grads from the 80s are finding their way back to Caldwell to live and work or relocate after retirement and give back to their community by serving in board seats and volunteering time and expertise.

Next up: Monday, 6 PM at Bluff Creek Distillery.
