Hypervigilance in veterans is real — it’s not “just being on edge.” For many who served, the brain stays on alert long after combat, showing up as constant scanning, startle reactions, trouble relaxing, sleep problems, and avoiding crowds.
At Horses for Heroes, our gentle, predictable herd helps veterans rebuild safety and calm. Equine-assisted activities teach grounding, breathing, trust, and routine in a trauma-informed, nonjudgmental setting. Veterans often report feeling safer, more present, and better able to manage anxiety after working with us.
If you’re a vet struggling with hypervigilance: you’re not alone. Try a session with our team, practice simple grounding and breathing around the horses, and connect with our mustangs and peer groups. Friends and family: offer patience, ask how to help, and consider joining a session to learn supportive strategies.
