Until 2020, modern workweeks hadn’t changed much since the traditional 9-5 weekday model was introduced in the early 1900s. During the pandemic, companies were forced to reevaluate their policies and take on a more flexible, employee-forward approach. Hybrid work-from-home initiatives gave workers the ability to maintain a better work/life balance, but it blurred the lines of what a standard workweek would look like. This gave fuel to the more progressive 4-day workweek model.

Companies in the UK, Sweden, and Japan have already piloted trials and seen increased productivity and happier employees. It seems the 4-day workweek might be the answer to our new way of living. How do you feel about this new model?

Monkeypox is a rare disease that’s found in Central and West Africa. In an infected person it can cause fever, pain when swallowing, and a rash. The US had their first-ever Monkeypox outbreak in July 2003 when people were exposed to infected Prairie dogs resulting in 71 cases. People who tested positive were asked to quarantine and were given a smallpox vaccine to prevent transmission.

Today, dozens of cases have been reported across the world. According to the WHO, the virus has been detected in the US, Canada, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.
While the US has a vaccine that is ‘relevant’ for treating Monkeypox, government officials urge citizens to practice safe distancing to prevent transmission.

Diseases such as cancer, type 1 diabetes, MS, and rheumatoid arthritis cause the body’s immune system to attack its own cells. This causes many people with compromised immune systems to be unable to receive the vaccine due to higher risk of adverse side effects. As mandates are lifted, autoimmune patients not only have a higher risk of contracting COVID, but are also more likely to suffer extreme and potentially fatal symptoms.

For many immunocompromised people, the fight is far from over.

Happy National Heimlich Maneuver Day!

Today we’re celebrating a life-saving technique. When someone’s choking you have a small window of time so it’s important to be prepared and act quickly. A person that’s choking will likely be unable to speak or verbally ask for help. Some visual indicators are clutching their throat, wide eyes, and waving.

Heimlich Maneuver steps:
1. Position yourself behind them
2. Place your fist under their rib cage and put your other hand on top
3. Push inward and upward at the same time 5 times
4. Repeat until object is expelled and breathing has returned
