I'm definitely exaggerating in this video, but I think it's important for people to understand that “paying attention” looks different for different people. ADHDers often focus better when we're not worried about things like staying still or maintaining eye contact.

My ninth grade teacher noticed me doodling in class while he talked, and instead of chastising me, the next day he dropped a stack of scrap paper and markers on my desk and said "I can tell that drawing helps you focus. Hopefully these tools make it easier”. I'll never forget that small but mighty act of compassion, insight, and understanding 🥹 If you ever see this, Mr. Goble: THANK YOU. You're one of the best teachers I've ever had.

Other factors can also make people feel like this, like trauma and anxiety, so it's not exclusive to ADHD. But a lot of ADHDers do experience this feeling, and this is one reason why. ❤️

Truthfully, this was a vulnerable video for me to make. I've carried a lot of shame and guilt around hobbies I invested in only to do them for a few months (or weeks 😳).

To help with that, I'd try to monetize the hobby enough to pay for the supplies to make it “worth it”. Of course, monetization is a great way to suck the joy out of a joyful thing, so that likely contributed to my quitting.

But my therapist once said to me: "You don't need to do a hobby for a lifetime for it to be worthwhile. If you enjoyed yourself and spent within your means, it was worth it.”

So that's the energy I try to bring to that shame and guilt. I really did enjoy myself—and I learned a lot. I even made a few cool things along the way 🤸🏻‍♀️

If you've been following me for a while, you may have seen a version of this video a year ago. I've been going through old content lately and stumbled upon it. It's still one of my favorite ADHD tips so I wanted to make a new and improved version because the original version cringes me out now 🙃

If you're feeling extra ambitious, you can make a point to clean out the dump zones every week or so . But even if you don't, they still look much better than if stuff was all over the counter.

Happy Sunday 🥔 Been thinking a lot about potato days lately. The nicer I am to myself during my potato days, the fewer I actually need. If I spend my potato days feeling ashamed of myself, I need even MORE potato days because shame is draining? not restorative.

The way my best ideas come at 3am when I can't do anything about them, then I forget about them by the time I wake up.
