We’re excited to share that WinnMed Foundation has received a generous grant from the Winneshiek County Community Foundation to help fund a new clinic procedure chair for our Urology and OB-GYN practices!

This upgrade will enhance patient comfort and improve the overall efficiency of our clinical procedures — another step forward in providing the highest quality care for our community.

What is the difference between EMA and EMS?

EMA = Emergency Management Agency which is an abbreviation for what I do! Winneshiek County Emergency Management Agency is the official governing organization for the Winneshiek County Emergency Management & 911 Communications Center agency. The Winneshiek County "EMA" agency has a total of 9 people on our Team. I am the sole Emergency Management Coordinator for Winneshiek County. Under me I have a wonderful Team of 8 Emergency Telecommunicators (commonly referred to as 911 dispatchers) working with me. They handle and process all 911 calls/texts for Winneshiek County along with all non-emergent (administrative) calls for the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office and the Decorah Police Department. Along with those two law enforcement agencies, other partners include the Calmar Police Department, all 7 of the local fire departments, and each of the medical services throughout the county. They page out the appropriate emergency response agency according to the location of the 911 caller. They offer each emergency response agency assistance through the radio, i.e., answer questions, provide additional information, etc. On the emergency management side, I can offer assistance either on the radio, phone, or on scene but the bulk of my job is completed behind the scenes through planning, training, and exercise programs provided to our emergency response agencies, elected officials, schools, the public, and more. We are partners to each of the emergency service organizations in the county but we are NOT "in charge" of any.

EMS = Emergency Medical Services. These are your day-to-day heroes who come to your aid during a medical emergency after 911 is called. Examples of local EMS agencies are WinnMed Ambulance, South Winneshiek First Responders, Winneshiek County First Responders and others. Again, not under Winneshiek County Emergency Management.

I hear the term "EMS" mentioned a lot when referring to EMA. Although I will always have a warm spot in my heart for our EMS partners, knowing the difference between the two agencies and the important, yet different work each do is vital.
