A fitness client this morning commented that before starting private fitness sessions, whenever she would reach her arm out to shake hands with someone she would be aware of her upper arm tissue “flapping”. Now she is proud to show off her triceps because they are toned and strong!

Stay tuned for offerings in the New Year to help you take control of your health and fitness! 💪🏼

Patient Testimonial:
“I went to Longevity Physical Therapy to solve chronic pain and dysfunction in my back, pelvis, ankle, shoulder, and knees. The owner Lauren worked her magic and helped me achieve what I had lost hope for: the chance to start working again and return to my favorite activities. She is masterful as both a clinician and as a compassionate human being who will give you thoughtful, science-backed solutions to your health and functional problems. I highly recommend Lauren. Your treatment will never be based on a “cookie-cutter” approach; you will always be treated as unique individual.
Wonderful!”

A common question from postpartum patients is How long will my recovery take? Remember that each person’s recovery will look different, but a general guideline for c-section recovery is written below!

C-section Recovery Timeline

0-2 weeks: initial scar healing phase, limited mobility

2-4 weeks: uterus and deeper fascial layers healing, okay to do light walking

4-8 weeks: incision should be healed by end of this timeframe, gradual increase in mobility

8-12 weeks: fully closed and healed scar, gradual return to prior exercise and activities

If you want to learn more about postpartum recovery and returning to exercise, schedule a free consultation today to learn how physical therapy can benefit you.

This was first said to me by my swim coach, Kit Carnes. 🏊‍♀️

We focused on the little things- details like exploding off the blocks at the start, holding a tight streamline, not breathing in or out of the turns, and finishing with strong fingertips.

She said as long as we focused on those little details, the big things, like winning the race and getting your best time, would take care of themselves.

This is so true. If we take care of the little things, the big things are also taken care of.

When I see people who have been dealing with pain for a long time, I usually ask about their sleep, exercise, and eating habits. Why? Because how we treat our body in general can affect every other bodily process, including our perception of pain.

So this is your reminder to take care of the little things.

💤 get 6-9 hours of restful sleep every night and try to make a routine out of your bedtime habits
🍅 eat a healthy diet full of whole foods and try to eliminate as much processed food as you can
💧 drink 7-10 glasses of water per day in addition to eating a well-balanced diet
🏃‍♀️ get regular physical activity- aim for 30-45 minutes per day, walking counts!!

Try this and let me know when you start to feel better.

Thank you Coach Kit for the words of wisdom!

Body awareness and movement control are two of the most important things I teach patients with hypermobility disorders like Ehlers-Danlos.

As someone who has EDS, I’m used to adjusting my position and form during work out classes to accommodate my body.

It’s so easy to let my elbows and knees dip into hyperextension, but learning to control it and NOT allow it to happen has helped me have LESS pain while working out.

It all comes down to increasing strength, control, awareness, and mindfulness related to your body movements.

Sometimes it can be hard to tell on your own what your body position looks like during certain sporting activities or postures.

A Physical Therapist can help guide you through movements and positions in a way that is safe for your body, along with making suggestions on adjustments.

Just because you have a hypermobility disorder, doesn’t mean you can’t participate in sports and be active!

PLANTAR FASCIA STRETCH 🦶

While the plantar fascia can’t actually “stretch” it’s still very important to keep it mobile.

The plantar fascia originates on your heel and connects to the tendons that help flex or bend your toes.

Plantar fasciitis is often related to decreased mobility of the plantar fascia and related ankle muscles such as your calf muscles.

🙋‍♀️ plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain seen by physical therapists!

Try this: get in a kneeling position with your toes tucked under you and sit up straight. In this position, your big toe (the most important one) is extended and places the plantar fascia in a more lengthened position. This can help maintain mobility in the plantar fascia, which can decrease your heel pain!

If it’s your first time trying the position, it may be uncomfortable 😣 try lifting your hips up instead of sitting back on your feet.

Do this everyday for 1-2 minutes and you’ll notice improved foot and ankle mobility!
