What does a pelvic floor physical therapy do?

We do everything an orthopedic physical therapist does plus we have special training to treat the muscles, ligaments, joints, and fascia surrounding the pelvic floor.

The pelvic floor muscles have many functions including:
*support viscera
*stabilize the low back
*stop and start the flow of urine/f***l matter
*s*xual function

Dysfunctions of the pelvic floor can cause:
low back pain
p***c bone pain
hip pain
abdominal pain
painful s*x
urinary leaking
f***l incontinence
difficulty emptying
constipation
bloating/cramping
pe**le pain
erectile dysfunction
pain during pregnancy
post partum complications

It can be common but not normal to have pain with s*x. If you are having pain with s*x, it can be a symptom of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction and you will likely benefit from pelvic floor therapy.

The answer to this problem should never be " Drink a glass of wine". Sadly, people are given this medical advice by their health care providers and often times invalidated for their concern/symptom.

Pelvic Floor therapy should not hurt. Some techniques that we use at pelvic floor therapy are manual therapy, pressure point release, biofeedback, muscle relaxation, down-training, stretching, massage, dilator training, yoga poses, and proper breathing.

I would also recommend uses a quality lubricant for pe*******on. Avoid ingredients such as glycerin, petrolatum, warming agents, preservatives and osmolality. These can cause vaginal irritation and pain.

Call us today to schedule your first appointment or free 15 minutes video consultation to answer any questions.

Healthy Bladder habits can make a big difference to having a great quality of life. Many people think they have an "Over-active" bladder but really they might suffer from pelvic floor muscle dysfunction and years of poor bladder habits. You are able to take control of your bladder instead of your bladder controlling you.

The answer is YES, and you should for several reasons!
1. Your pelvic floor therapist should be working more than internally on your pelvic floor, because literally any other part of your body can effect your pelvic floor and vice versa
2. Often times patients have a change in symptoms during menstruation, and this gives us the opportunity to assess what is going on during this very specific time
3. We can help decrease pain and symptoms that you may have during your period, so even if you aren't feeling that up to a pelvic PT session you will often get relief
So next time your period comes around keep your pelvic PT appointment.

Did you know it is not only helpful to see a pelvic floor therapist when you are pregnant if you are having symptoms of pain, leaking, pressure, etc, but also to prepare for your body for an optimal birth?

During our birth prep visits we will assess your pelvis, ligaments, posture, breathing and pelvic floor muscles and make sure you are confident going into labor in delivery. We are frequently asked when these visits should occur, if you are having symptoms we recommend an appointment immediately to get you relief, if you are not having symptoms then we recommend scheduling an appointment between 32-36 weeks.

The pelvic floor is so complex, never rests, and is vital to our quality of life and everyday function.
If we injure our arm we can let it rest until it feels better, but our pelvic floor never rests, so it requires expert care to help heal.

This is a very common question!
We always say that you should feel a CHANGE by the 6th visit, and if you don't we are missing the root cause of your symptoms.
Now change does not mean symptoms will be resolved by the 6th visit.
There can be a high amount of variability based on severity of symptoms, how long you have had symptoms, and if there are other underlying issues/conditions.
We need to remember that we are all on our own path of healing, and cannot compare our trajectory to others.
Our main goals of therapy are:
1. resolve symptoms so you can feel better
2. determine the cause of your symptoms
3. help to promote adaptability in your body for long term relief
This process can take a few visits, weeks, months or years, but we are with you every step of the way.
We would love to be with you through your journey, reach out today to schedule. 617-576-3204

A heel slide with a transverse abdominis contraction is a gentle strengthening and mobility exercise we like to give postpartum patients after they have mastered a basic transverse abdominis contraction.
This should be done symptom free (no doming, leaking, pain).
