Our Mental and Behavioral Health Promotion Unit hosted another Medication Takeback Day event with the Cambridge Police Department and the Cambridge Council on Aging. There was a great turnout, and we collected several pounds of medications!

Couldn't attend but have some old expired medications you want to get rid of safely? You can drop unused medications (no liquids) 24/7 at the permanent drop box at the Cambridge Police Department, 125 Sixth St. The drop box is located in the first floor lobby, near the Records Unit.

You can also use medication mailers. Mailers are available to Cambridge residents at the health department’s office at 119 Windsor Street on the 2nd floor. Contact Danielle McPeak at 617-665-3872 or dmcpeak@cambridgepublichealth.org. Mailers can also be found at the Cambridge Senior Center and the North Cambridge Senior Center.

You can also throw out medications safely in your own home with medication deactivation and disposal pouches. These pouches make the medication non-reusable and prevent harmful medications from contaminating landfills and water systems. Pouches are free to Cambridge residents and can be picked up at the health department’s office upon request. Contact Danielle McPeak at 617-665-3872 or dmcpeak@cambridgepublichealth.org.

There’s a new sharps disposal drop box in Cambridge! It's in Harvard Square, on the corner of Church Street and Massachusetts Avenue, right next to the MBTA Red Line entrance.

The new drop box is to help make it easier for residents to dispose of their sharps safely and help curb sharps left in public spaces. In Massachusetts, it’s illegal to dispose of needles, syringes, or lancets in the regular trash due to safety concerns.

Did you know there are multiple locations for Cambridge residents to drop off needles and syringes? Visit our website to learn more: www.cambridgepublichealth.org/services/dispose-of-needles-and-syringes-safely
