As a clinician, you probably know that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Early recognition and access to evidence-based, weight-inclusive care are critical to changing this.

When clients are overlooked or misdiagnosed, access is delayed. Inclusive, weight-inclusive care strengthens recovery outcomes and protects lives.

Techniques like GI massage for constipation and gut-directed hypnotherapy are gaining attention as effective, non-invasive methods for managing digestive issues.

Incorporating these approaches into treatment plans can enhance patient outcomes and improve overall quality of life.

Recognize that traditional body positivity approaches may not fully resonate with everyone, especially those managing chronic illness and/or eating disorders. For some people, focusing on what your body can DO, instead of what it looks like, may be helpful. However, if this doesn’t work for you, we get it. This message isn’t always resonant for people with chronic illness.

Instead, take a moment to pause and truly honor all that your body has been through and overcome due to illness or disability. While you may not have chosen these challenges, you’re still here, and that is something to be proud of!

Despite the prevalence and severity of eating disorders, access to timely, culturally responsive treatment remains limited for many.

This National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is a call to strengthen referral pathways, interdisciplinary collaboration, and access to evidence-based, weight-inclusive care. Organizations like The Renfrew Center (The Renfrew Center) play an important role in advancing education, advocacy, and treatment options that meet people where they are.

As dietitians, we know eating disorders are not just individual struggles - they are shaped by systems that delay care, dismiss symptoms, and limit access to support.

The National Alliance for Eating Disorders (National Alliance for Eating Disorders) challenges us to confront those gaps directly. During Not One More Weekend, their programming includes:

A National Day of Support with 25+ free, therapist-led virtual support groups
Inclusive spaces for people in recovery and loved ones, including BIPOC-affirming and LGBTQ+ groups

A closing day focused on recovery, remembrance, and change
is a reminder that prevention, early intervention, and access save lives - and that meaningful change requires collective action.

Eating disorders affect people across all ages, genders, body sizes, and cultures - but access to care has not always reflected that reality.

As we head into the final days of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, it’s worth asking: what does “Every Body Belongs” look like beyond this week?

In this article, we explore why weight-inclusive, culturally responsive eating disorder care is essential in 2026, and what belonging must look like in clinical practice year-round.

Eating disorders are serious mental and physical health conditions - not choices, phases, or failures of willpower.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week calls clinicians to lead with compassion, challenge internalized biases, and create spaces where clients feel believed, safe, and worthy of care.

Compassion is not optional.

As clinicians, listening deeply matters. Lived experience - especially from those historically excluded from eating disorder care - offers critical insight into gaps in diagnosis, treatment access, and recovery support.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is an opportunity to reflect on whose voices are centered in our work, and how we can practice in ways that are more inclusive, affirming, and responsive.

Because being heard can change outcomes.

Our Story

Marci RD Nutrition: Food & Body Image Healers® helps clinicians and clients alike develop smart, enduring strategies for overcoming eating disorders, disordered eating, and the backlash of chronic dieting.

Our organization serves two groups of people – individuals looking to develop a healthier relationship to food and their bodies and clinicians seeking training on how to counsel individuals in recovery from eating disorders and disordered eating. However, a single working philosophy informs the work we do in both fields.

Marci developed her online training institute designed specifically to educate and empower dietitians to work in the field of eating disorders. She is proud of her online training institute and looks forward to building her library of training opportunities in the coming years. In addition to her online teaching, she is an internationally recognized and sought after speaker. She loves developing and giving talks and workshops to her fellow colleagues.
