Continuing our discussion with Jessica. We feel so inspired by her amazing advice and can’t wait to help so many women with the Lily.
Bloomer Tech- What was your path towards diagnosis?
Jessica- In 2017 I had reported to my doctor a couple times about chest pain, but nothing ever progressed, and no tests were done. It was treated as or with other things I had going on. I switched doctors for various reasons, and 6 months or so after I had a SCAD (Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection) which caused a heart attack. They did a heart cath and were able to see the tear in my artery. Then three days later I had a massive MI due to a blood clot in the same artery, causing a 100% occlusion. This was the beginning of a long journey of tests, studies, scans, labs and multiple doctors to get more information and diagnosis. The number of appointments is too high to count, I have had 8 heart caths in 3 and a half years, multiple CT scans, dozens of labs, four hospitals and about 3 months of inpatient visits for various reasons.
I was referred to the Mayo Clinic for their SCAD clinic and have been up to Rochester Minnesota many times in the last few years, where they have continued to sort through things. I have a stent in my heart and a spinal stimulator in my back to help with the vasospasms which have continued since the attacks. I also have been on 30 or so different medications to try and find the correct ones.
Bloomer Tech- What is one piece of advice you would give to women just learning their heart risk or diagnosis?
Jessica- It is possible to live your life no matter what the scenario. Heart disease is often overlooked, for example my family history was cancer. I had every check, scan and test done to be preventative. We do not do that, especially as women, with our hearts. Heart attack was not on my radar, ever! Do not think of it as a negative but as being pro-active like we are with other things like cancer. Heart disease is not just about your physical health, you need to focus on stress and emotional health as well.
