What is a Cervical Facet Injection?

Cervical Facet Steroid Injections are used to reduce neck pain and sometimes headaches that are related to the cervical spine. Injection can help improve flexibility, enhance function, enabling patient to pursue PT and return to work or leisure activities. Its main mechanism is to decrease inflammation of the facet joint(s) which may be related to degenerative changes or an injury (example whiplash injury or neck strain) painful facets often cause pain on one side of the neck which may radiate and create headaches or refer to the shoulder or shoulder blade area. At times, the presentation is on both sides in which case each side is treated separately (1-2 weeks apart). It is encouraged to couple facet injections with organized physical therapy program, improved desk ergonomics, proper lifting techniques, and modification in pillow and sleeping surfaces for optimal outcome.

What is a Cervical Epidural Injection?

Cervical epidural steroid injections are intended to treat pain provoked by conditions that cause inflammation to one or more cervical nerve roots. When a nerve root in the neck gets compressed or inflamed as it branches off the spinal cord and exits the spine, radicular pain can travel down the arm and into the hand. Cervical nerve root inflammation that leads to neurological deficits, such as numbness or weakness, is called cervical radiculopathy. The purpose of a cervical epidural steroid injection is typically to provide enough short-term pain relief to allow you to begin, or continue, an exercise program.

Cervical radiofrequency ablation is a longer lasting procedure that is done if a patient experiences good relief with the cervical medial branch block.

The last installment to this patient education series is Spondylolisthesis.

Spondylolisthesis is a spinal condition that affects the lower vertebrae (spinal bones). This disease causes one of the lower vertebrae to slip forward onto the bone directly beneath it. It's a painful condition but treatable in most cases.

Next up in our patient education series is Scoliosis.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. In general there are important differences to note in a diagnosis of scoliosis, it can be congenital, idiopathic, degenerative, and neuromuscular. When the exact etiology of scoliosis is unknown it is considered "idiopathic scoliosis". Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type of scoliosis. Scoliosis related to neurologic or primary muscle disorders is called "Neuromuscular scoliosis" as seen in cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. In aging populations, because of arthritis, the spine can become scoliosis. The type is called "degenerative scoliosis". Carrying heavy bags to school, doing sports, or habitual poor posture does not lead to scoliosis.
