How not to use I feel statements

Most of us, when asked to picture a narcissist, rarely conjure visions of someone mournful, shy, and self-doubting.

Instead, we imagine a loud, vain, preening, braggart; reality TV stars often come to mind.

Many therapists dread the client who monologues about their talents, shrugs off all efforts to help, and vehemently denies even fleeting moments of fear or grief—and with good reason. It can be nearly impossible to help this type of narcissist because their entire sense of self is based on never needing someone’s help in the first place.

Regardless, the extraverted, grandiose narcissist is just one version of narcissism, and it turns out, there are several others.

✨ Exciting news ✨
The New York Times has just featured me — for the second time this year — and listed Rethinking Narcissism as the first of four essential books on the subject, recommended by psychologists, researchers, and doctors.
As a clinician and author, I’m deeply honored to see colleagues recognize the book as a trusted resource for understanding narcissism in all its forms.

This is your last chance to register.

The Coercive Control Professionals Certification Training starts Thursday.

If you’ve been meaning to sign up, now is the time.

This training is for professionals who’ve seen the system fail protective parents and their children.

It’s for clinicians who’ve felt unsure how to document patterns of abuse that don’t leave physical evidence.

It’s for evaluators and GALs who want to stop defaulting to neutrality in cases where one parent is clearly dominating the process.

We start on Thursday, October 2.

You’ll learn:
– How coercive control manifests post-separation
– How trauma shows up in children, and why it’s often misread
– Why DARVO and alignment behaviors complicate evaluations
– What it takes to name these patterns — clearly, clinically, and confidently

This is an investment in how you practice, how you testify, and how you support the families counting on your expertise.

You’ll earn 14 CEUs, join two full days of live, virtual instruction, and be listed on my site by state as a certified professional.

The American Psychological Association is deeply concerned about the Administration’s recent announcement on autism.

Promoting unsupported scientific theories risks fueling stigma, undermines public trust and distracts from real scientific progress.

The way we see ourselves—often shaped by old pain—can blur the view of those closest to us.

Sometimes, we brace for rejection where there's care, or shrink from love that feels unfamiliar.

In healing, we learn to update the mirror, not just the relationship.

Our self-perception, shaped by past wounds, quietly colors how we receive love.

If you’ve learned to expect dismissal, even care can feel confusing.

Healing begins when we notice not just how others treat us—but how we’ve been taught to expect to be treated.
