“When a shocking adoption
story makes headlines,
people want to believe it is rare.

An exception.
A one-time failure.

But what if it is not?

What if it reveals how the
system is designed to work?

The issue is not just one bad actor.
It is a structure that too often
prioritizes obtaining children,
finalizing adoptions,
and protecting permanent separation over preserving families first.

At Saving Our Sisters, we start from a different place:

Not
“How do we complete
this adoption?”
But
“What does this family need
to stay together?”

Because adoption should never be the first solution.

It should be the last.

Paulo Freire was arrested after a military coup in 1964, labeled a threat for teaching poor adults how to read, and forced into exile because education was making people question the system.

Paulo Freire was not just teaching literacy. In Brazil, millions could not read, and that kept them locked out of political participation. No vote. No voice. His method changed that fast. Adults were learning to read in weeks, but more than that, they were learning to question power, land, and control.

That was the problem.

The system did not fear reading.

It feared awareness.

When the coup happened, he was targeted.

Arrested.

Interrogated.

Exiled from his own country.

The work did not stop.

He continued writing and teaching abroad, shaping what became Pedagogy of the Oppressed, a framework that turned education into a tool for liberation, not control.

The reason he was removed was the same reason the work spread.

It did not just teach people how to read.

It taught them how to see.

A PERSONAL APPEAL

Help Dr Joyce Maguire Pavao

To Help Children And Families

In the World of Adoption

Even in the most loving adoptive or foster families, children carry real experiences of loss, grief, and identity questions that most of the world doesn't understand. When the adults around those children — parents, therapists, teachers, caseworkers — have the right tools, everything changes.

Jean Strauss writes:

Dear Friends,

Today is my 71st birthday.

It marks yet another year in which I still do not have the ability to get the original record of my own birth in my home state - a right afforded to all other citizens in California who were not adopted.
While it may seem like a simple piece of paper, it is dehumanizing to live a lifetime without having access to the fundamental truth of one's own birth.

This reality is shared by millions of adoptees across the country, many of whom have never known their origins. With California on the cusp of new legislation that could help, I've been inspired to create:
The Adoptee Birthright Archive

You can watch it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTaV3-eYSJQ&list=PL-0yjDs_xJdK83VUoQao7EgQPhHRXQU8o

This archive features over 70 films I’ve created over the past 22 years across 15 states. It documents the legislative efforts and personal stories behind the long struggle for adoptees’ access to original birth records. New films will be added over time, including any recent developments here in California.

These short and feature films capture the voices of generations of adoptees, birth parents, adoptive parents, advocates, and lawmakers. Not only do they reinforce the need for policy change, they honor the people who had the courage to step forward and be a part of this effort.

My hope is simple:

• To make this history visible
• To provide context for ongoing legislative efforts
• To help others better understand this issue
• And to contribute to continued change

If you're able, please share this link or forward this email to one person you think might care about this issue. This is the simplest way to help this effort reach beyond my immediate circle and create ripples in the pond.

Thank you, as always, for your support and for being part of my life.

Gratefully,

Jean Strauss
