Kerala Journal
DAY 1
I have arrived. 🌝
Under a full moon, at 2:45 a.m. on February 1, I landed in Kozhikode, India, where I’ll be for the next two weeks. My last trip here was in 2018, when I served as one of 60 delegates worldwide for the first AYUSH, sponsored Yoga Ambassador Tour—a true highlight of my life. I feel incredibly grateful and happy to be returning, even though I’m sad to miss an incredible (and rare) snow event in the southeast.
This time, I’m here as a yoga representative for the first Ayurvedic & Wellness Conclave. I’ll be in India until February 13, immersing myself in the ancient practice of Ayurveda, (yoga’s sister science) and then spending ten days on familiarization tours at hospitals, resorts, and spas throughout Kerala. My hope is to bring this knowledge back to little ole Camden, South Carolina, and eventually to bring others back here—people interested in yoga and Ayurveda as paths toward health, balance, and well-being.
So far, my first day has been fairly uneventful, in the best possible way. I left home Friday afternoon and arrived very early Sunday morning, so today has been more about landing than doing.
I had ambitious plans to Uber to the beach and promenade, but after a couple of dusty miles walking to an ATM in 90° heat, I realized my nervous system needed more time to reset. So I shifted gears. I practiced my daily kriya- the Kundalini Yoga Stress Set for the adrenals and kidneys, drank a big glass of electrolytes, and settled in. Right now, I’m resting in my room, eating cheese nips (though I just ordered Kitchari and a salt lime soda for room, service), sipping tea, and reading. An early bedtime tonight feels like the wisest way to let my body and spirit adjust to India time.
Only a few photos to share for now, but many more to come. I love this darling myna bird who serenaded me through the hotel room window. (I'm on the 6th floor.)
I’ll be writing a short daily journal highlighting moments from this journey, and if you’d like to follow along, you’re warmly invited to join my Substack, The Wild Refined: https://substack.com/?r=lz8kz&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=profile
I truly believe that when we make an effort to live well, the universe meets us with opportunities—to learn, to grow, and to remember our shared humanity. I feel deeply humbled and grateful to be here, and I hope you’ll join me for the journey ahead!❤️
