Camden Healthy Start

Camden Healthy Start Camden Healthy Start is a program of the Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative. Far too many babies in Camden are dying.

We provide services and support to pregnant women and mothers with children up to 18 months old. Our city’s infant mortality rate is double that of the state and nation. This is completely unacceptable, and we know that many of these deaths can be prevented. Camden Healthy Start provides services and support to ensure every birth is a healthy birth. We reach out to pregnant women and new mothers to connect them with the health care and resources they need to nurture and care for their children. Our staff uses proven strategies to reduce preterm birth, low birthweight, birth defects and other key factors that cause many infant deaths. We also work to address the social and economic factors that negatively impact child health and development. Infant mortality is an important measure of a society’s health and success. We must work together to make sure all of our children get a healthy start.

International Overdose Awareness Day is recognized annually on August 31, and is aimed at ending overdose, remembering those who have died without stigma or judgement and acknowledging the pain of the loved ones left behind.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and Lt. Governor Tahesha Way issued a proclamation that reads, in part, "August 31st is recognized in communities around the world as a day to remember individuals who were lost to drug overdose and to support their families and loved ones, and to galvanize action towards ending preventable overdose deaths."

The Cooperative and its subsidiary, Family Health Initiatives, are pleased to be part of a statewide commitment to increase awareness of, work to prevent and support efforts to mitigate the impact of overdoses on our communities.

The Cooperative, in collaboration with Rowan College at Burlington County, hosted a screening of the ProPublica documentary, 'Before a Breath,' for our professional partners in May. This film weaves together the stories of three mothers who lost children to stillbirth and are working to make pregnancy safer.

Inspired by ProPublica's groundbreaking reporting on the stillbirth crisis, which was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize, the film is a powerful story of pain and healing by showing how these mothers transformed their personal grief into a mission to improve maternal health and prevent future stillbirths.

A panel discussion with experts, advocates and community members, and the film’s director, Nadia Sussman, was held following the screening.

🎥For those who could not attend the screening, but wish to view 'Before a Breath,' you may watch the documentary at no cost by clicking on this link ➡️ https://bit.ly/4l2Ff3l
