Today is National Candy Corn Day. Because of that, we wanted to introduce you to the Big Candy Corn Switch. This is a proximity switch. It is highly sensitive and does not require a physical touch from the user to activate it. Simply wave a hand or move your body within 1-in/2.5-cm of BIG Candy Corn and it activates. It has an auditory beep and visual feedback can be turned on and off and a larger activation area that is approximately 3.5-in/9-cm wide. It can be plugged in and activate a toy or device that has a 3.5 mm switch jack.

The Big Candy Corn switch is available for a short term loan from the PA Assistive Technology Lending Library. For more information on borrowing this or other switches in the library, go to https://techowlpa.org/library/.

Changing Hands just received this rigid frame manual wheelchair. The wheelchair has a 16" wide seat. It has a chest strap and seat belt, as well as wheelchair tie-downs for transportation. It has a tilt feature but does not recline. This item is available for pick up in Camp Hill.

Changing Hands has just received 2 electric patient lifts. Both come with a new battery and charger. However, we do not have slings for them. These are available for pick up in Camp Hill.

We want to share this information with everyone.

UPMC Carlisle Rehab Institute is having a community service event at the UPMC Carlisle campus, this Friday from 9am to 1pm. There will be staff cleaning & servicing wheelchairs, vendors available to make on site adjustments & help with potential new wheelchairs, other vendors, arts & crafts, & food available. Anyone can sign up until the event & we also accept walk ins.

Reminder Rosie is a simple, hands-free alarm clock that allows you to record your own voice messages. Use it to remember medication, meal times, or appointments. The clock can store up to 25 reminders, each with 8 seconds of recording time. When not making an announcement, Rosie displays the current time, date, and day of the week in large print.
This is not a “smart” device and does not require internet access.

UCP collaborated with Messiah University's Occupational Therapy program to hold it's second Adapted Toy workshop last week. Families who attended brought in a battery operated toy. Dr. Foster's Occupational Therapy students then adapted the toys for switch access. Families and providers who attended left with their toys adapted as well as a 3D printed switch the students had made. We would like to thank Dr. Foster and his students for making this event a success for those who attended. We look forward to next year's toy workshop.

Today is National Book Lover's Day. Do you enjoy reading books? Is the small print in books getting a little hard to see?

The Pennsylvania Assistive Technology Lending Library has a number of video magnifiers available for short term loan. You can borrow a video magnifier to try for a few weeks to see if it is helpful. When the loan is over, you simply use the return shipping label that came with it to send it back to the library. There are a number of magnifiers in various sizes to try.

UCP Central PA Assistive Technology staff worked with Occupational Therapy students at Messiah University yesterday to make some ability switches. As part of their class, students 3D printed the switch parts, then worked with UCP staff to learn how to solder the switch mechanism and cable to the switch, then were able to test it out to activate a toy. Next week, students will be working with families to adapt a battery operated toy for switch use.

Do you have difficulty hearing people on the phone? Pennsylvania's Free Special Phone Program has a variety of CapTel captioning phones. The CapTel 840 Plus is designed for use with traditional analog telephone lines. The CapTel 840i, 880i and 2400i require Internet to work. These captioned telephones show captions of everything your caller says. The Internet versions connect to both your telephone service and your Internet service to give you the best of both worlds: voice and captions. The captions are provided by a free service that uses the Internet connection to automatically display captions for every call, quickly and accurately.
