Rumi said, “These pains are messengers. Listen to them.” These messengers bring information, not judgement. We are built to notice when something feels especially resonant or satisfying. And also to notice what feels out of balance or out of alignment. It’s that noticing and listening, without judgement, that gives us the clarity and understanding to move toward greater balance and harmony. Toward what is in alignment with You, now.
It’s safe to sit with the messenger and listen.

When I stumbled upon the audiobook of "Slow" by Lee Holden, it felt like destiny had placed it in my path. In a world where speed and hustle are glorified, the title alone piqued my curiosity. Who wouldn’t want to embrace the idea of slowing down in a fast-paced world? As the narrator’s soothing voice filled my ears, I instantly felt at ease and intrigued. Lee’s calming tone drew me in; it was as if he was inviting me to join him on a gentle journey of self-discovery. The way he spoke was engaging each word carefully delivered, leaving me eager to absorb every lesson. As I listened, I realized that slowing down isn’t just a concept; it’s a practice that can transform our lives. Here are 7 profound lessons I learned from this enlightening book:

1. The Value of Presence. Lee teaches that being present is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. He paints a vivid picture of how so many of us race through life, often distracted and missing the beauty around us. From my own experience, embracing the practice of mindfulness has allowed me to enjoy small moments with heightened awareness. When we slow down, we can actually taste our food, feel the sun on our skin, and connect meaningfully with those around us. This lesson isn’t just about stopping; it’s about engaging with life wholeheartedly.

2. Listening to Our Body. Holden emphasizes that our bodies communicate with us constantly, but we often drown out these signals with noise and busyness. As I listened, I couldn’t help but reflect on the times I ignored my own stress or fatigue to push through the day. Lee reminded me of the importance of tuning into these messages. By taking a step back and allowing myself to rest when needed, I’ve learned to prioritize my health, resulting in a clearer mind and a happier spirit.

3. The Art of Simplification. One of the most impactful takeaways from "Slow" is the beauty found in simplicity. Lee discusses how clutter both physical and mental can weigh us down. Inspired by his insights, I started decluttering my living space and minimizing my commitments. The weight lifted, and I discovered that less truly is more. This lesson encourages everyone to strip away the unnecessary and focus on what genuinely matters, leading to greater joy.

4. Cultivating Patience
In our hustle-driven society, patience often takes a backseat. Lee highlights how slowing down fosters patience, not just with ourselves but also with others. Reflecting on this has helped me consider my responses in stressful situations. Instead of reacting immediately, I now pause to take a breath and think. This shift has made my relationships richer and more forgiving, allowing me to understand others on a deeper level.

5. Connecting with Nature. Holden explores the profound connection we can have with nature when we intentionally slow down. Listening to his vivid descriptions, I was inspired to step outside more often. I began taking strolls in the park near my home, allowing myself to be enveloped by the sights and sounds of the outdoors. This connection reminded me of the peace and grounding that nature provides, encouraging anyone to seek solace outside as a form of rejuvenation.

6. Accepting Creativity. Through Lee’s narrative, I found encouragement to explore creativity as a slow, mindful practice. He illustrates how creativity flourishes when we let go of urgency and perfectionism. His perspective helped me appreciate my artistic endeavors in a new light. Whether it’s painting, writing, or cooking, nurturing creativity becomes an enjoyable process rather than a checklist to tick off. This lesson invites others to explore their creative sides without the pressure of output, making art a more fulfilling experience.

7. The Power of Stillness. Holden imparts the significance glorifies busyness, the idea of simply being can feel foreign. Lee’s gentle reminders about the power of meditation and quiet reflection prompted me to incorporate moments of stillness into my daily routine. Even if it’s just five minutes a day, sitting in silence has become a sanctuary for my mind, enhancing my overall well-being. He teaches us that in stillness, we can often find clarity and direction.

😱Tantrums can feel incredibly overwhelming in the moment…triggering, embarrassing, overstimulating, and completely draining. It’s natural to want it to stop, to feel the urge to yell or give in. ⛈️

⚓️ But here’s something important to hold on to: every bit of patience you muster, every calm word you speak, and every deep breath you take during the chaos makes a powerful difference. In those moments when your child’s emotions feel too big to handle, your steady, loving presence becomes the anchor they need most.

☀️ By offering your love and calm, you’re not only giving them a safe harbor, you’re also showing them how to weather their own emotional storms. You’re modeling what it looks like to stay grounded, to regulate, and to respond with compassion, even when it’s hard.

What if we could recognize our faults and look to see what is beyond them?

What if we could see, with great tenderness, the painful unmet needs that have shaped our behaviors?

For many of us, this process is the work of a lifetime, one that requires the active support of loved ones, therapists, spiritual teachers, or healers.

Yet it begins the moment that we are willing to look at ourselves through the eyes of compassion.
