What if ONE word is stopping schools from giving kids exactly what they need?

Why is the word “YOGA” still so contentious in schools?

Over the last 23 years of delivering educational courses, I’ve consistently seen how powerful yoga-based practices are for young people - improving focus, reducing stress and building confidence.

My classes in schools have always been in demand; yet, I’m hearing more and more from educators and instructors that the word “YOGA” itself has become a barrier.

Many tell me they can bring the same techniques into schools, i.e. breathwork, movement, mindfulness, as long as they rebrand the class and the word “YOGA” does not appear on a flyer!

This feels like a missed opportunity, given the significant rise in children presenting with Additional Support Needs and neurodevelopmental challenges!

Yoga's foundational movement practices are exactly what modern education needs, not something it should shy away from.

In my 23 years of working in both whole-class and small group settings, I have witnessed exceptional changes in children who engage with these practices.

More recently, my training in Functional Developmental Behavioural Neuroimmunology has helped me to understand why these changes are taking place!

It's quite simple - Yoga’s fundamental core movements are the very same developmental patterns a child must master in physical development. When repeated, they help to integrate primitive reflexes and support the brain’s growth and organisation.

So, why the resistance?
Is it:
- a misunderstanding of what yoga is?
- concerns about perceived religious connotations?
- a hesitation to adopt something that feels unfamiliar in an educational setting?

I find this fascinating because, in my experience, schools want these skills for their students. The impact is tangible.

So here’s my question to the education and wellbeing community:

Why do you think the word “yoga” can be such a sticking point? And how have you approached this when bringing these practices into schools?

I’d love to hear your perspective – especially from those navigating this challenge right now. SO PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS OR EXPERIENCE

If you know that using Yoga in the Classroom is something you want to do then you have two options

Today, I had the pleasure of teaching at CV's Buddy Program, focusing on gratitude. We created appreciation webs (a little hard to see) to express thanks and recognize each other's unique contributions. The session was filled with warmth, positivity, and strengthened bonds. A memorable day of smiles and connection! ❤️
