Keep an open mind, be willing to learn & if something resonates, apply it! It can be a small change like eating a green salad for lunch instead of a sandwich, drinking more water, walking up the stairs instead of taking the elevator, taking time to stretch your body after a workout, or using your MFR balls on your tight spots for 5 minutes after waking up in the AM. Small steps!! 🥇…….🐢💨

If you HAVE to shovel the white stuff today, here’s how to do it if you’re recovering from an injury and in the strengthening phase of your rehab:

Warm up with gentle range of motion only stretches, maybe even a hot pack before you go out and hydrate before you start. Obv wear as much support as you can (sport tape, brace, workout gloves, whatever is appropriate for your injury) and be mindful of your grip (don’t grip super tightly with the fingers, keep wrist in neutral as often as you reasonably can). Smaller shovelfuls and take your time/go slowly and pay attention to your injury if it starts to hurt. Take short rest breaks (like you would between sets) more often than you think you need them. And if it’s truly a LOT, break the task up over hours (or even days if that’s on option). If you’re sore after, pls ice (don’t skip it bc you’ve been out in the cold); inflammation sets in slowly so you want to head it off at the pass a few hours later. Basically, treat it like an exercise session for your injury and not a marathon to endure. 🙃 Good luck all & enjoy the snow! ❄️

"Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going inside ourselves."
- Bessel van der Kolk, The Body Keeps The Score. Myofascial release (MFR) helps us to become more aware of what we feel in our bodies. With more awareness there is the opportunity to heal!

More range of motion.
Improved performance.
Greater ease in your body.
This is how:
Myofascial release (MFR) is performed to alleviate pain and dysfunction that is the result of shortening or tightening in the connective tissue (fascia) caused by injury, trauma, inflammation or poor posture. MFR differs from conventional stretching in that it is done with prolonged, continuous holds by the therapist.
Conventional stretching only affects the elastic and muscular portions of the tissue, providing temporary results.
The Hands-on Wellness OT’s form of MFR releases fascial layers restores greater flexibility, helps with pain reduction, improves athletic performance and enhances overall wellbeing.

Come get a Hands-on Wellness MFR treatment: you'll be receiving the John Barnes’ unique form of gentle MFR to release fascial layers to restore greater flexibility, help with pain reduction, heal old injuries, improve athletic performance and enhance overall wellbeing. MFR differs from conventional stretching in that it is a very gentle form of hands-on bodywork, done with prolonged, continuous holds by the therapist where each position needs to be maintained for 3 to 5 minutes for a true and permanent change in the tensile integrity of the muscles and fascia. Conventional stretching only affects the elastic and muscular portions of the tissue, providing temporary results.

Researchers at Stanford have shown in a new study that love can mediate pain by stimulating the same areas of the brain normally targeted by pain-reducing medications. Granted, it IS the *head-over-heels-passionately-in-love* kind of love that stimulates the nucleus accumbens, a key reward center, but the research is promising and paves the way for more work in this field. It reinforces what clients experience at Hands-on Wellness OT with EFT work: when they work with SELF-love and forgiveness, there is a reduction in pain, a decrease in stress and anxiety, and a greater sense of ease in all they do. To try a FREE 15 minute EFT discovery session for yourself, call 845-915-0115 or click the link in the bio.

After an upper extremity injury many people feel that they cannot continue to do yoga, especially if their doctor gave them a weight-bearing precaution. But having a yoga 🤸‍♀️practice has many benefits (as long as it’s done safely), 🧘‍♂️including improving core strength, managing stress during recovery, maintaining social networks and fostering a spirit of adaptability and resilience. Come and see a CHT (certified hand therapist) and upper extremity specialist with advanced training to show you how to modify asanas and sequences to avoid weight on your upper body, and, once you’re cleared for weightbearing, how to start to introduce weight safely in different wrist positions. ✨🕉🙏🕉✨
